User Review : Magic the Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers

Ups
  • Great way to play MTG when your away from friends
  • Cool visual effects
  • A lot of DLC's
Downs
  • Very limited deck customization
  • Short campaign
  • Can get boring quickly

Magic? Or Tragic?

None of the above. Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers is a great downloadable treat for MTG fans, but it still has plenty of issues.

Story: As any MTG fans would know, you are a Planeswalker. A wizard that can summon dreadful, and wonderful creatures, cast spells to cause chaos or to heal wounds. Planeswalkers will fight each other in duels to claim victory, and of course bragging rights and maybe trade a card.

Gameplay: It plays out like any normal MTG match in real life. A table with two to four people and each person has a deck with seven starting cards. When you attack there are neat little clawing effects and sounds. The game can get frustrating, since some duels rely mostly on chance rather than skill. Just in case you were wondering, no you can not customize your deck with whatever cards you want. Not offline, or online. It really does suck. You do unlock 17 cards, one at a time when you win a match in campaign with each deck. So the game gives you a choice: which deck do you want to use mostly throughout the campaign and get more cards for? The controls are a problem worth mentioning as well, they are confusing and can affect gameplay.

Difficulty: If you are not a seasoned MTG player, your likely to get stumped later on in the campaign. You'll need to practice a lot if you want to beat it.

Graphics: The cards show up very nicely in HD. However its not the best looking downloadable game available. The effects are also a nice touch.

Fun Factor: If you play MTG a lot, you may get bored with this quickly. However if you play it a lot yet you wish to play against different people, you will want this game. You can go up against other people around the world via online matches. On the other hand, if you have never played it one out of two things will happen: you will fall in love with it, or you will find it too confusing and complicated. Hopefully the former.

I agree with your review. Short and simple, it was an easy read. My only problem with your review is that I tried to find matches online to play but couldn't. I also found no way to play against a friend on one console. I realize that there could be cheating involved in that, but they should at least offer it.

The sequel, Magic The Gathering: Duels Of The Planeswalkers 2012 is out. Most of the people who played this game a lot online has bought that one to play.

I find it much easier to actually play a game. The other night my friend and I tried playing the demo for this game and eventually said 'screw it, lets just play the actual card game.' Much easier to see everything, more customization, etc, etc.

I totally agree. This game is really just a way to play MTG when you don't have any friends over, or if for some reason you don't have your cards.

Yup, it's funny because I hadn't played Magic for somewhere between 7-10 years when iw as about 14 or 15 or so, and lately my friend and I have been joking about wanting to start up again because our nerd-ness level has been getting higher and higher lately, and finally last Thursday we went to a store that just opened called "The Relentless Dragon" and told the store owner that we hadn't playe din almost 10 years and wanted to start again. The guy got super excited and gave us five starter decks with 30 cards each for free and told us to mix two colors and experiment until we get the hang of it. We didn't want to go in there and not spend any money though so we took the free decks and got 4 booster packs each and went home and started playing and we're totally hooked again. We each bought fat packs and neither of us can stop buying boosters and we're starting to build our own decks, I can't believe I ever stopped playing this game, it's so awesome.

Coping with loss through 'Magic: The Gathering'

Games, escapism, and dealing with loss.

Examiner's David Leavitt writes: "A recent accident left me without the use of fingers in my right hand. An even more devastating consequence than the damage to my body was that done to my soul. I'd lost the most important person in my life. Marjorie was more than just a lover to me: She was my best friend, confidant, inspirational muse and other half."
