The Drive Of Your Life?

A 40 dollar demo? Sounds crazy and few games can dare to pull it off but fortunately GT5P falls well into that category. With over 70 cars and 6 tracks the game certainly feels quite thin compared to other GT games.

The producers of the game claim the reason they made the prologue was because in its current state it simply isn't fit to be called GT5 yet and in many ways this is true. The experience gotten from playing a GT game goes just beyond racing. You can actually play a GT game and leave knowing more about cars than you did before and it really is that deep.

The game has taken a lot of steps in the right direction to make the game more accessible to beginners. They have included standard physics which is far more forgiving than professional physics and a best driving line that tells you when to brake and how fast to take a turn. However i think it would have been a lot easier if they had included the pros and cons of each car in terms of handling, speed, acceleration e.t.c. Sometimes you might save up to buy a car for particular event only to realize it handles poorly or it simply isn't fast enough. This can be a bit frustrating as the cars get more expensive.

As for the visuals, there simply is no other way to put it. GT5P is the best looking driving game ever made. The lighting effects in the game are ridiculously realistic. When driving through a dark tunnel and emerging on the other side, you are temporarily blinded from the sudden rush of light. The game also manages to pull this off at 1080p and 60fps. Although it is not native 1080p, it is still higher than 720p.

GT5P is truly a remarkable game each car handles differently and you can tell a lot of effort was put into making this game. Unfortunately despite all the beauty and the detail, GT5P still suffers from flaws. The biggest flaws are the online modes and the lack of damage. As it is right now the online mode is virtually unplayable. With no mic support, there is no community based feature. Based on your selected car, you are allowed to participate in certain events online. The races can accommodate up to 16 racers online but the amount of chaos in an online race with 16 people is insane. Cars tend to dissapear and reappear at random. One second they aren't there and the next second they are right in front of you for you to run into. You cannot create custom matches and you cannot select individuals to race against. This leaves the online mode feeling very basic and ancient like something built on the ps2.

The lack of damage also gives professional wall riders the ability to display high scores without working for them. Online racers also don't hesitate to play bumper cars with you. As is the fastest way to take a turn is to bump into the car ahead of you at full speed sending the bumped car off course while the momentum of the collision slows you down enough to successfully make your turn.

The only plus side to the online mode is it is more rewarding that the sp events. The credits earned online go a long way in helping you purchase some of your favorite vehicles. The resale value for most cars are a lot lower than you would like so for this reason it is probably best to do those extra races and not sell your car. Though it may take a while, its a lot better to collect all the cars in other to see how each of them drive.

At the end of the day for some GT5P may not be worth the 40 dollar price tag but the game is still far from a demo and offers up a lot more enjoyment than most 60 dollar racing games. Assuming car damage truly is added in fall and the online mode is fixed, the final version of this game could go down in history as the best driving game ever made.

Score
9.0
Graphics
Gameplay is excellent, physics and car handling are almost perfect but with no car damage, the gameplay lacks a little. Not enough to break the game though
10.0
Sound
The best looking game i have ever seen.
9.0
Gameplay
Engine sounds are different for each car and different for each view. Music is also great, however custom sound tracks would have been the best
9.0
Fun Factor
When fully immersed into the game, it can be very fun indeed
5.0
Online
Simply terrible. No excuses to be made only reason to play online is for the increased credits.
Overall
9.0

And I'm glad someone took the crummy online into consideration.

This is your first UR right? You should write more, all the cool people frequent the UR section. You want to be cool don't you?

Breakfast5848d ago (Edited 5848d ago )

Oh man...the online is horrible, right now. But, it doesnt seem to lag at all for me, so thats a big plus.

The graphics blew my freakn mind at first. I say best looking game out on console right now.

My problem with the game is pressing 'x' to go...R2 on the PS controller is garbage...my finger slips off.

I think its worth maybe 30 dollars, but i would (did) pay 40 dollars any day...just as long as the updates make there way.

"the final version of this game could go down in history as the best driving game ever made."...Yes, as long as the dev team, keeps improving the features and such things.

Totally agree with the review...good job! The only thing i dont agree on, is that the graphics should have gotten a 11...but, thats it.

I won't try online because I don't want to tick anyone off with my noob skills ^^

I really like that blue line and the turn speed thing for me because I really don't like doing that stuff. Why should I have to let go of the gas in a racing game? It's just wrong I say! The graphics are nice but I don't think they are the cream of the crop. The best visuals are in the replay not when you are playing. But really I didn't get the game for the graphics.

One thing I honestly hate about it is them forcing you to have to buy some crap car for a race. I mean really no one should have to be forced to buy a car they wouldn't even buy in real life if they had the money to waste on it! Then you have to race it too no thank you!

Rourker5847d ago

and the online leader boards for them are great, if thats considered online than the online is awesome, though I must agree the 16 player races are kinda badly done, but we can hope that polyphony gets feedback about it and fixes it for the full games release.

free to play no matter how good the game is if it is a free to play i dont play.

i want to pay full price for a full balanced experience unlocks shouldn't be earned by money but by the hard work you put in the game.

my free to play nightmares are borderlands, diablo, titanfall,w arhawk 2,halo and star wars battlefront.

SteamPowered3714d ago

If you have ever played Path of Exile, that is the best way of microtransactions ever. PoE is a great game. Its what Diablo 3 should have been and it is completely free. All the items for purchase are cosmetic and the store isnt intrusive at all. In fact, I had to actually look in the menu to find where the microtransactions are housed.
But for the most part, yes. F2P is garbage.

iceman063714d ago

I would add Warframe to that list as well. Very much like you describe. Everything that you need is offered to you in game. Things that you pay for are either cosmetic or for convenience (i.e., you are impatient). Might not be the game for you, but the F2P structure is pretty sound.

caseh3714d ago

At which point did Titanfall become free to play hmmmm...

ThatArtGuy3714d ago

He's not saying that they are, he's saying it would be horrible if they were.

caseh3714d ago

He should have said 'would be' rather than 'are' I guess.

lonelyplayer3714d ago

Hey I agree 100% with you. I hate those unbalanced pay-to-win games.

maniacmayhem3714d ago

I agree.

The whole F2P model is designed to keep the user playing and paying well past an ordinary retail price. Most devs also design features that prey on a person's gambling, need to collect or complete an objective as soon as possible type of vice.

Trust I worked at Zynga and you should read the design tricks and tactics used to squeeze every penny out of their user base.

Yes, every company has their tactics but the F2P design in most video games is so blatant and disgusting. I stay away from those games...well I try but that damn Marvel Alliance... :(

gamer20133713d ago

A great example of a game that features the blood sucking F2P model would be Warthunder.

ExCest3714d ago

The Valve f2p model is really good. You don't have to pay a dime or grind for hours to get items to boost your "skills". You just happen to want more hats so you pay money for them.

Prime1573714d ago (Edited 3714d ago )

Edit: I'm just not sure it's so simple as lumping free to play as bad....

That's pay to win which is a derivative of free to play, and which is also very common amongst AAA $60 retail games. The $60 lures you into a false sense of free.

There are games attempting many facets of the free to play model and some are pretty good, like planet side, some private servers, team fortress, DOTA and warframe WHERE you literally never (have to) spend anything - I didn't on planet side 2 with 20+ hours, and similar with warframe.

There are also some like killer instinct and warframe (KEYWORD: CROSSOVER) where it's basically a glorified demo. KI has only one/two characters, and warframe trenches you into a character you might not like in a little (but least you can build a new one several hours later).

Then there are the worst of the worst where you have to pay to win. Sometimes it's by buying upgrades to your gear like in runes of magic, or buying overly expensive increased experience in leveling grinding games like Rohan: Blood Feud.

Where I'm coming from: I had a free to play phase where I played (in no particular order but memory):

ragnarok (both subscribed before free to play, and free to play), path of exile, dragons nest, cloud nine, holic, requiem: bloodymare, runes of magic, tribes, warframe and planetside 2 (pre-ps4), blacklight, dcuo, dragon's nest, maple story, runes of magic, Farmville, clash of clans, team fortress 2 (actual, I bought it that long ago), dota, league of legends, lotr online, minecraft, wizard 101, dungeon fighter, many aria and net gear games, perfect world...

And many more that I can't remember because I don't want to.... And by played, I would say I spent more than 5+ hours (but mainly 20+ on aforementioned titles) on each of those game listed above, sometimes hundreds.

Worst business practices

Paying to play online (PS+, XBL)
Season passes
disc locked content
Paid DLC (DLC should be free unless it is significant enough to be an expansion)

Jubez1873714d ago

Paying to Play Online: It's a service. A TV is a product, cable is a service. A playstation is a product, PS+ is a service. How many services do you get for free? I'm sure you pay a cellphone bill as well.

Season Passes: I 100% agree on here. Never pay for anything that is not guaranteed to be coming.

Paid DLC: No one says you have to buy it. If it's cosmetics or trivial things such as Themes and Avatars there's no problem with it. You don't HAVE to buy it. It takes resources to MAKE dlc. Why would a company (video game companies are profit maximizers, btw) go and make a whole DLC questline or storyline and then give it to you for free? That brings ZERO marginal revenue to the company. I know it sounds great, and companies that do it are great. But the suits up top, yea they don't care. That's just business. Just because you bought an entre doesn't mean the dessert is going to be free. And AGAIN, you don't have to buy it or support it.

Imalwaysright3714d ago (Edited 3714d ago )

Games are NOT services. We pay full price for them and that means that we should be able to play 100% of their content with no additional cost.

crusf3714d ago

"Paid DLC" Then people complain no DLC is coming for there particular system or game.

Prime1573714d ago (Edited 3714d ago )

I agree with you mostly, but I disagree with ps+...

I bought into that in 2011 and don't regret it. It's like Sega channel, but feasible.

Maybe I just play too many games, so ps+ makes sense.. Like the payday 2, remember me, bioshock infinite, outlast, and more in the last month or two... I would have had to spend an easy few hundred on those games I wanted to play.

Jubez1873714d ago

As a business student, I have to disagree heavily with some points.

_FantasmA_3714d ago (Edited 3714d ago )

Paying to use your own internet, DLC (all of it, I'd rather have expansion packs with a ton of content), DLC coming out a week after the game's release, incomplete games with missing sections sold as DLC, pre order bonuses, short and pointless campaigns, not having server lists (like COD which insert you into random games and maps), expensive and permanent digital prices, yearly sequels with minor changes at full price, lack of challenging AI, lack of originality, and most of Micro$ofts "business practices." This may sound like a hateful statement, but I blame M$ for bringing most of these things to consoles. I remember when there free and inexpensive map packs on Live in the early years of 2006 and 2007, then they started pinching pennies.

MaxwellBuddha3714d ago

Who else here has been gaming long enough to remember when paying $50 got you the WHOLE game? No left-out content sold as DLC, disc-locked content, season passes, outfits, avatars, etc.

Excuse me, I need to go have a cry at what has happened to my beloved hobby.

Derekvinyard133714d ago

Amen brother, plus there wasn't as much bugs as there was today. Nearly 80% of games have patches

Vegetarianshark3714d ago (Edited 3714d ago )

Ea happened,Capcom happened these giant shameless corporations has bastardized the gaming industry with their BS money-grabbing tactics and ruined so many amazing games (Battlefield,Resident evil and many more).Very sad indeed.
