Is it worth the download? Or should you get Zombie Apocalypse instead?

Yes. No. Dead Nation is a marvelous game that has continued to thrill me and my friends as we travel through a zombie filled city in a seamlessly flawless Co-Op experience.
If you want to buy a game on the PSN store, and you can't make your mind up between Dead Nation and Zombie Apocalypse, don't hesitate, you should call yourself a fool for hesitating to buy Dead Nation.

Story: Dead Nation takes place in a fictional city which is, yep you guessed it, infested with thousands of zombies. You play as either Jack Mcready or Scarlett Blake. Both are immune to the infection and use this to their advantage as they blast through swarms of zombies trying to escape the city. The story to Dead Nation is very simple and non-elegant but this is typical for most zombie games. The cut scenes in between each of the ten chapters provide the only source of an actual story. While your playing the game there is no voice work or any Scottish guy on a radio asking you, "Would you kindly" every 25 seconds. Its just straight up zombie massacre.

Gameplay: Seamless, easy, and fun. You use your left analog stick to move and your right analog to aim the gun. R1 to shoot. Its very simple and easy to master. You can upgrade weapons each time you reach a checkpoint by approaching a weapon shop. There are roughly around 7 weapons that can be upgraded in different categories, i.e. rate of fire, damage, duration, and blast radius. There are not only the usual zombies, there are other special zombies such as the Bombie and the Cutter.

Difficulty: This is a hard game. Younger people who play this game will probably get stumped around the 4th or 5th chapter. Its difficult at first, and it just continues to get harder and harder as the game goes on.

Graphics: The graphics are nice. Explosions are good, and flying objects and zombie ragdolls are satisfying. Yet the only drawback is how the camera is so darn high. I really wish you could make the camera zoom in, because sometimes its difficult to tell whether or not a corpse is alive or not when there are about 70 lying around you.

Fun Factor: Your going to have a lot of fun with Dead Nation. If you like to play online, that's not a problem. You can play online co-op and it even supports voice chat so you can hear your companion screaming their little heads off when the cutter zombie slices them in half.

Score
8.5
Graphics
Great visuals, yet the camera is agitating.
8.0
Sound
The sounds that zombies make are really cool, the weapons sound nice and the eerie music really set the mood. However the limited voice work really hurts the sound.
8.5
Gameplay
Controls are slick and the aiming mechanism works. But don't expect anything ground breaking.
9.0
Fun Factor
Zombies and car explosions. There aren't many more things in life that aren't as cool.
9.0
Online
Voice chat and all the fun from singe player.

Its worth it for me because I got it as one of my free games with infamous. I just finished infamous and will start this soon. But I kind of want to play infamous 2 now, so I might buy and play that before I get to this one.

I should convince my real friend who has a ps3 to get this and play co-op but that will be had because all he plays is COD BO. I bet he wont even DL his free games because he would just play COD anyways. He knows about the free games but all he needs is COD every year LOL. When PSN went down he just didnt play it at all, because no COD.

Yea I know what you mean. Literally ALL of my friends on PSN are addicted to Black Ops. Its really annoying. Oh and I'm glad my review helped!

But there are about 5-10 that are always on one of the CODs.

I started playing this yesterday after my inFamous 2 plat. Fun game so far, but that camera has gotten me killed several times.

Solid_Dave4702d ago

Yes Its very hard to tell whether or not that's a zombie in front of you, or just a pile of dead bodies.

Great review, we share the same thoughts on the game. My friends and I play this online all the time now.

Awesome game, with just a few flaws that keep it from being great.

The game IS hard, but not overly so. Except for the fact their will be times when its just too dark to see. Maybe my TV isnt set bright enough, but there are definitely places where your torch just doesn't cut into the darkness, making you easy pickings when they swarm you.

The other reason the difficulty is artificially boosted is because of the crappy checkpoint system. The levels are long, and there are mid level checkpoints, but you cant save them. You only save at the end of each level. Sometime you will repeat large areas and get 100's of kills over and over again only to die in a dark corner and start again, and it makes you feel like skipping through and not collecting all the loot, At least if you kept powering up you might be able to make it after a while.

Still a fantastic twist on the Smash Tv formula. Graphics, weapons, controls and gameplay are great but the difficulty balancing really drags the game down a bit.

I think I will be picking up Fatal Frame 3 since I missed it on PS2 back in the day. Speaking of, there are some really good deals going on.
