Real Review: Cross Fire

What with the large amount of F2P MMOFPS games out and my craze with EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM (excluding War Rock), I had to cover Cross Fire. It doesn't have the production values or as large a player base as something like Combat Arms, but it is better than that game in some respects. Let's check it out.

There are 2 teams in this (naturally) named Global Risk (SWAT, basically) and Black List (Terrorists/Mercenaries or whatever) and 7 game modes.
Standard: Free-For-All, Team Deathmatch, Wipe-Out (Last Man Standing), Search and Destroy
Outside genre barrier: Zombie Mode (a lot like CA's Quarantine Regen), Ghost Mode (Black List players are "ghosts". They are completely invisible whilst standing still and can kill with 1 hit. However, the Global Risk players have to kill the ghosts or protect a point on the map to win. Ghosts emit a heavy breathing sound and can splash around in the water to help players find them. They also become quite a bit more visible while moving.), Special Mode (In this mode, the host can alter many different options. It's all in his hands.), Escape (Get through the portal as many times as is told while the other team defends.)

All of these modes are fun and though the ranking system is slow and money is a grinding affair to get (though players start out with a good amount of money), killing other players is a much better affair in here as the community isn't anywhere near as beset by hackers. Therefore, you typically won't be called a "HACKER!" anywhere near as often. Most players are usually quite friendly and have good sportsmanship, though the player base isn't as high as CA.

The maps are excellently well done, though, as most of them are the same on both sides as to not grant one team advantages over the other. Granted these maps are small, but they don't need to be big in the first place. Some of them can get boring after a ton of games hosted there (Egypt TD cause the host never switched), while others are a nice change of pace from land environments (Ship has a particularly nice background to dwell in as you get shot in the back). There's a decent amount of maps here and offer a great balance within the two teams, which really helps the game through its presentational issues.

First off, the graphics kinda suck. The game went into beta sometime in January of 2009 and it looks like Sudden Attack. So, yes, that's disappointing and saying "it's free!" doesn't cut it. Alliance of Valiant Arms, WolfTeam, and Combat Arms are all free and they look better. Even WolfTeam and Combat Arms are older and they look better. So, yes, that's kinda sad. The sound still isn't at the highest standards, but they do they're job and nothing more. It's also torture to your eyes when you hear "Fire in the hole!!" with a slight Canadian tone to it (Hool instead of Hole?) about every 5 seconds cause the English version didn't have developers smart enough to make it say "Grenade"! Seriously, this really takes away the experience.

And the experience is actually quite great. You can go through the VERY fast-paced gameplay without the fear of getting kicked for your skill and instead make some new friends in the process. The ranking system is slow and getting money is a chore, but balanced maps help make the game more fair to the fans. Unfortunately, the graphics aren't quite up to par with today's graphical standards and the audio is nothing to brag home about. Still, this is a great game that is just as fun. If you enjoy any of the other F2P shooters on the market, grab this one too.

I will, but in due time. I have a line-up of F2P MMO games I need to review first, but I'll definitely add it to my list.

Damn, forgot about about this one.
So the Beta should be the Smilegate developed multiplayer mode, right?
The singleplayer campaign by Remedy should release with the final build.
