Zombie fodder!

You have to wonder why zombies are so popular? Students dress up as them come Halloween, films dedicated to them, heck they even got to dance with Jacko in Thriller, but you still have to ask yourself, why? Let’s face it they are the living dead, whose only purpose is to move slow and die; yes they’ll take out a few cast members, mercifully leaving the main star, but above that what else do they do?

It is perhaps this last feature, namely dying in countless numbers which has held their appeal for so long, it certainly has within the gaming world. House of the Dead, Resident Evil, Dead Rising, even in the 16 bit era they were well served with great titles like Zombies Ate My Neighbours. Now is the turn of the PSN title Burn Zombie Burn, which adds a comedy skittishness, similar to Evil Dead to the whole affair.

The graphics are colourful and solid, yet still firmly rooted in a cartoonish nature. The hero of the piece is taken straight from stereotypes of the genre and could easily fit into Tarantino’s Dawn Till Dusk, even if that is a vampire flick you get the point!

Zombies vary from your standard image of a Zombie and instead there are cheerleaders, Ballerinas, American football players. It all adds to the hilarity of the game while at the same time acting as signifiers for the gamers so they can react accordingly.

Burn Zombie Burn is made stronger by the gameplay underpinning the whole experience. Kill the zombies with your desired weapons and you’ll get points, however set them alight before killing them and your points will be multiplied. There is one slight snag though with this, by torching the zombies they get quicker, and when they strike they have more effect. It makes for a wonderful balance between reward and risk.

The game is also deliciously brutal in a comic style. Weapons range from baseball and cricket bats through to lawn mowers and shotguns. The weapons all handle differently, for example the chainsaw is best used when going in circles around Zombies, yet the Uzi handles better when the gamer picks a vantage point and stays shooting the oncoming enemies. Gamers will undoubtedly have their favorite weapons, which spawn across the map, making for frantic sprints across the game world while an inferno like horde chases.

Apart from the standard arcade mode developers Double Six have been keen to add longevity to the title. Each level or world will have a score to attainment to reach with a bronze, silver and gold medal attached to an eventual score. These target scores are devilishly poised, meaning that they are not instantly easy for the gamer to reach, allowing for countless replays. Due to the random movement patterns of the Zombies and the choice of weapons on offer then no two games ever play the same way.

Throw into the mix a variety of game modes such as Defence, which sees the gamer frantically holding back the zombie masses, Objective, and Free mode and the game has countless hours of gameplay. This is certainly a game worthy of purchase, making you realise why it is just so fun shooting zombies!
