Games are usually sold (physically or digitally) to make a profit, that’s how the majority of the industry works. Of course, some can earn additional revenue by selling extra content and with in-game purchases, but fans purchasing the game itself is how the majority of profits are earned. However, there are a lot of Free to Play games out there, that only rely on in-game purchases to turn a profit. You’d expect that a practice like that is not the most profitable, but in the case of Mihoyo (the developers behind Zenless Zone Zero and Genshin Impact), you’d be wrong.

Mihoyo’s Annual Profit is Around Five Billion Dollars

On September 9, a 2024 Internet Yuelu Summit Forum was held in Hunan, China. During a talk about business startups from that region, they mentioned that Liu Wei, a co-founder of Mihoyo, was a college student in Hunan when he founded Mihoyo.

“…with more than 6,000 employees worldwide and annual revenue of more than 30 billion yuan, thanks to funding from the Shanghai University Student Entrepreneurship Fund when he was studying at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It has grown into One of the most important technological and cultural enterprises in China.”

For the record, 30 billion yuan is about 4.2 billion dollars. “More than 30 billion yuan” brings them to probably around 5 billion US dollars.

Quality Games Will Always Turn a Profit

The community agrees that a well-made game will always keep the players’ attention. If the company works with the playerbase and cares about their opinion, the players will be more inclined to spend money on their games. It can all work “when the gaming company truly focuses on creating great games with tons of content, most can be enjoyed for free, that truly understand what the cultured players want, instead of all those games where the companies’ main focus are raking in as much money from the players…” as stated by Neither_Sir5514.

In all honesty, every company aims to turn a profit, and Mihoyo is no different. “Hoyo is out to make money sure, but a huge difference between them and other gaming megacorps is Hoyo is private. they make money by investing profits back into the game…“ said anondum. “…A great product/ service rightfully deserves its success like the way Hoyo games did, and there’s nothing wrong with that.“ added Neither_Sir5514.

This really shows that pouring love and dedication into your product will pay dividends.
