Mihoyo games are known for having fleshed-out worlds and intriguing characters and Zenless Zone Zero is no different. Fans all over the world discuss who is their favorite character and what part of the game is the best. But in all of that, some players began to wonder: what would it be like if you were really living in the city of New Eridu? Of course, you’d have your favorite characters to hang out with (hopefully), but there is definitely more to it.
The World
In short, the world of Zenless Zone Zero is a post-apocalyptic one, where everything is destroyed by the Hollows, except for New Eridu. The doorways to these Hollows can pop up everywhere so it is the job of the Hollow Investigative Association to enter it to perform research, rescue missions, and the like, while Public Security keeps the population away from these portals.
There is absolutely no info on whether other settlements exist but since New Eridu does not seem to be lacking in, well, anything, chances are it is getting its supplies from somewhere.
Maybe a Bit Depressive
A lot of players think life in New Eridu would be pretty depressing, with everything being holed up in one city and the constant threat of Hollows. “Can’t help but feel like if I was a New Eridu resident, I’d probably have lost it by the time I was in college. You only have one city to roam for the rest of your life, and s**t could hit the fan in an instant because of Hollow Disasters. Bonus points if you have low Ether aptitude. One second you’re on your way home from work, the other you’re turning into a crystal zombie.“ said dagababa in their Reddit thread, discussing this exact topic.
Others chime in with their takes, like DenraREX who said: “I mean if you look deeper into it, the lore is really sad and messed up since the previous civilization already crumbled to the Hollow and now you have New Eridu which is the current remaining civilization and people are trying to live their lives to their best effort,” and Mehfisto666 added: “Also not a tree or a spot of grass anywhere to be seen…”
Humans Always Adapt
With all the depressing talk, some players are adamant that humans will still thrive. We are know to be pretty adaptable to, well, anything, so the situation in New Eridu would not be that horrible. “It’s post-apocalyptic but the situation isn’t so bad that people can’t have normal lives. They don’t have food shortage or anything like that. Also I think most hollows aren’t that big so getting caught in one isn’t that likely.“said DarkWolfPL.
Others point to the fact that there definitely is some sort of life outside the city. “I also have to wonder about the implications of certain things. There are large cargo ships sailing around the bay, for example, and the manufacturing of things seems to be on a scale that would apply to a global economy.” said Papa_Shasta, and “There’s whole vacation agencies so I assume there has to be something outside the city.” added speganomad.
All in all, could be worse, don’t you think? Sure, there are Hollows, but there is also a ton of cool stuff to see, and let’s not forget we can interact with our favorite characters on a daily basis.
