Breath of the Wild had a heavy focus on solitude and quiet moments of epic adventure. However, previous games have been known to give Link a variety of sidekicks to join him on his adventures. These companions give him direction and aim, helping our titular character progress in both the story and his mastery of combat.

So, will Tears of the Kingdom continue this tradition and give Link a companion to assist him in his quest? Let’s explore what we know so far.

Though Link’s earlier history sets an optimistic precedent for whether or not he’ll have a companion in the upcoming Tears of the Kingdom, it is crucial to consider how he did not have a partner of any sort in Breath of the Wild, which was released directly prior. With that game being much more focused on solo traveling, the same might be the case for its direct sequel, Tears of the Kingdom.

Still, going off of the trailers so far, we have a couple of candidates for possible companions to Link in Tears of the Kingdom

Throughout the series, Link has been joined by various companions that have helped him on his quest to save the kingdom of Hyrule. In the early Zelda games, for example, Link was accompanied by a fairy companion named Navi who would guide him through the game and provide him with hints and tips.

In later games, Link has been joined by a variety of different companions, each with their own unique abilities and personalities. One of the most beloved companions is Midna from Twilight Princess, who had a snarky attitude and a shadowy, imp-like appearance.

The addition of companions has become a staple of many Zelda games and has added depth and complexity to each of their already rich worlds.

Zelda And the Champions

An obvious and fan favorite candidate for Link’s companion in Tears of the Kingdom is the Hylian princess, Zelda herself. Though trailers suggest that Zelda and Link may not spend much time together, it is still a possibility worth noting.

Additionally, the descendants of the Champions may offer some quests. These include Yonobu (descendant of Daruk), Riju (descendant of Urbosa), Sidon (descendant of Mipha), and Teba (descendant of Ravioli).

The Spirit of Fi in the Master Sword

Fi first appears in the game “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword” as a spirit residing within the sentient sword known as the Goddess Sword, which later becomes the Master Sword. She serves as a guide and companion to the game’s protagonist, Link, and provides him with information about his quest to save the land of Skyloft and the surface world below.

Link has the Master Sword from the beginning of Tears of the Kingdom, which is said to contain Fi, as Breath of the Wild had previously teased. Although Fi may not speak as much as she did in Skyward Sword, given that the Master Sword is damaged, she may still be able to provide some direction to Link if she does appear as a prominent character in the game.

From the trailers, it seems that whatever force sealed Ganondorf has taken up residence in Link’s arm. With it, Link has powers similar to those of the Sheikah Slate in Breath of the Wild.

This alone is not enough to make it more than a tool for Link, however, fan speculation suggests that it may be a Zonai artifact, and the latest trailer indicates that the Zonai will play a significant role in the game’s lore. Link’s arm could be inhabited by an ancient Zonai hero who could help explain the mysteries of the new ruins he encounters.
