Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is here, bringing with it a new world to adventure through, both on the earth and above in the sky. While there is much new to the land of Hyrule, the fact that this game is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild means that there’s quite a bit of reminiscent content to enjoy as well. One of these main, largely unchanged, mechanics is cooking.

Cooking is an oft-overlooked piece of content, but one that can provide huge bonuses out in the world. For players unsure where to start, this guide will show them where they can cook, how it works, and what goes into making the perfect dish.

How Do Players Cook in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

To cook, players must first find a cooking pot. Cooking pots can be found all over the world, but are very often found in enemy encampments. Clear one out, and there’s a good chance will find a cooking pot ready for use.

Sometimes cooking pots are unlit when found. These can be relit through the use of flint, a torch, or any weapon that does fire damage. Simply hit the pot to get the fire going again. This lets Link cook some delicous food, though I wish we had the ability to make some yummy stew, cheese items, potato items, add garlic, and butter to more meals.

Players must then place food items into the pot to cook them under high heats. Players can select up to five ingredients to put in the dish, with a larger number of ingredients increasing the effects. Certain ingredients provide certain bonuses, so it is suggested that players experiment with a large number of ingredients out there to find the best dish for every situation.

What Kinds of Boosts Can Meals Provide in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom?

The types of boosts players can receive largely depend on the ingredients used and recipes made. The types of dishes and the boosts they can provide are listed below:

  • Hearty – Bonus hearts
  • Enduring – Bonus stamina
  • Energizing – Restores stamina
  • Chilly – Heat resistance
  • Spicy – Cold resistance

How to Cook Mushroom Meals in Tears of the Kingdom

To cook mushroom meals in Tears of the Kingdom, you have to first collect the required ingredients for the mushroom dish. Then you have to go to any cooking pot or open fire, and drop the ingredients in it, after which it will shortly become cooked and edible for you.

Fortunately, there are multiple varieties of mushrooms around Hyrule, so chances are you’ll come across a bunch of them even before you start cooking.

How to Cook Mushrooms Over a Fire

If you find an open fire while adventuring through the land of Hyrule, it’s possible for you to cook any mushroom you might have. All you have to do is:

  1. Open your inventory
  2. Navigate to the materials tab
  3. Select the mushroom you want to cook
  4. Instead of selecting the eat option, click on hold
  5. While holding the ingredient, press B to back out of the pause menu.
  6. Finally, drop the held mushroom into the fire and wait a couple of seconds for it to be cooked.

While cooking over an open fire is certainly doable, we don’t recommend it. Even though it’s very easy and convenient, you can only use one ingredient. This means you can’t make mushroom meals this way, which is a pretty big disadvantage since meals give significantly better buffs than since you can combine different ingredients.

Some of my favorite ingredients are:

  • Rock Salt
  • Vegetables
  • Eggs
  • Roast Chicken
  • Spicy Pepper
  • Hyrule Herbs
  • Carrots

Fortunately, Link doesn’t need fancy knife skills or a baking sheet to whip up these delightful recipes. He also discards the need for a fork and just shoves food in his mouth. Just don’t make Link eat dubious food, because the texture looks awful.
