The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has revolutionized the franchise with the introduction of new locations, enemies, and diverse abilities at Link’s disposal. On the young hero’s quest to rebuild the kingdom of Hyrule and save it once more, you’ll have access to four abilities to aid in your endeavors.
These abilities include Recall, Fuse, Ultrahand, and Ascend. We caught a glimpse of each ability in a gameplay demonstration for Tears of the Kingdom, hosted by developer Eiji Aonuma back in March. Now that we’ve reached the release of the highly anticipated title, however, we’ll finally get a first-hand look at the extent of each ability and its purposes.
For your reference, we’ve put together a list of each of Link’s newfound abilities and their uses in Tears of the Kingdom.
- Introducing amiibo: character figures designed to connect and interact with compatible games.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time game introduced a time traveling element into the series
- -this amiibo shows a 17-year old Link playing the ocarina that allowed him to warp back and forth across a seven-year gap to defeat the power-hungry Ganondorf.
- Recommended for children ages 6+
- Just tap an amiibo accessory to the NFC touch point on a compatible system to enjoy fun in-game extra features
- Compatible games on the Nintendo Switch system, New Nintendo 2DS XL system, New Nintendo 3DS XL system and Wii U console.
All of Link’s Abilities in Tears of the Kingdom
Including Recall, Fuse, Ultrahand, and Ascend, Link’s new Zonaite abilities will come in handy throughout your playthrough of Tears of the Kingdom. Each has its unique purposes, so you’ll need to discern when and where it’s appropriate to use them.
Recall
Link’s Recall ability allows him to reverse the flow of time as it relates to certain objects. Essentially, you can rewind the movement of large boulders, enemy weapons, and such with the use of Recall. This ability will come in handy in traveling to Sky Islands, which will require you to control the movement of fallen rocks to reach them.
It’s likely that this ability will also have its place in solving puzzles and dungeons throughout Hyrule, as well as in combat against various enemies and bosses.
Fuse
Link’s newfound Fuse ability does just that: it fuses two items together to create another. This applies to weapons and materials found throughout the kingdom of Hyrule, helping you to create stronger and more durable weapons. For example, fusing an arrow with ice will allow you to freeze enemies with your bow.
Additionally, you will be able to fuse cooked foods together to create heartier meals with greater effects. Although, we won’t know the extent of this aspect until the game’s release. You can also fuse items to your shield. Try any resource you have to find the best combinations, I like bombs and the Keese Eyeball myself.
Ultrahand
Perhaps the most creative of Link’s new abilities is Ultrahand, which enables you to build vehicles using materials found throughout the kingdom. This will include motorized buggies, aircraft, and rafts, among other vehicles to help you traverse the landscape. You cannot autobuild with this ability.
Ultrahand will likely play a huge role in completing puzzles and dungeons, as developers have teased that you will be limited only by your imagination when using this ability. However, you’ll recognize what materials can be used by their green hue.

Ascend
The last of Link’s newly introduced abilities is Ascend. With it, the hero can phase through ceilings to enter new areas. Of course, this explicitly applies to locations with ceiling-like structures, such as temples and caves. This will be particular helpful on Great Sky Island, other Sky Islands, and Shrines. It will be less useful in The Depths.
This ability can often be used in place of climbing, which requires stamina. However, Ascend isn’t always applicable. It’s not yet clear whether we’ll be able to use this ability to reach any Sky Islands or other high places like mountains, but we can assume it has a limited range.
With the help of these newfound abilities, Link is now more capable than ever to rebuild the kingdom of Hyrule and protect it from its attempted destruction. We’ll learn more about each ability and its uses with the release of Tears of the Kingdom on May 12.
