Navigating through Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s intricate character customization system can be a daunting process especially if you’re just starting out. You’ll be bombarded with elaborate descriptions of Wo Long’s nuanced player attributes, aptly called Virtues, without much of a clue what impact they’ll have as you progress through the game.

Virtues are like the player’s base stats, which you can level up just like in any other soul. So, ensuring you’ve got the right build is essential when it comes to advancing through the game. What Virtue should you focus on when you start Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty? Here’s our thoughts on that.

Wood is the most optimal Virtue to go with early on in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. With the way the Virtues system works as well as the game progression, some Virtues such as Wood will give you a much more significant advantage in the early stages. In the later stages, you can branch out and level others up as you advance.

What’s The Best Virtue In Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

The answer to the overall best Virtue still remains subjective since the most optimal Virtue is decided by your play style. Let’s break down all the Virtues you can level up in Wo Long, so we can answer the question looming over everyone’s heads. There are five virtues in Fallen Dynasty and here’s what they do:

Wood

Don’t be misled by the name, the Wood Virtue has its grit. For each level-up, you significantly increase your HP stat while moderately reducing Spirit reduction per hit and increasing the duration of your spells. You also buff your Earth resistance while nerfing your Metal resistance. It’s generally more potent with Swords and various gears when you level up your Wood Virtue.

Fire

No, you don’t get to blaze down Wood in a single strike with the Fire virtue, but the benefits are still worth considering. Fire is more appealing to players who prefer a slightly aggressive playstyle since it grants them increased Spirit from normal attacks while also rewarding them with a reduced cost for Martial Arts abilities.

Furthermore, plenty of your heavy melee weapons scale well with the Fire Virtue, accentuating your melee capabilities even further. If there’s one drawback to Fire, it’s the fact that Fire spells are some of the most potent in the game. That would be enticing if it wasn’t such a melee-oriented virtue, making this buff seemingly redundant.

Water

Water has incredible uses in a variety of niche scenarios. For one, you can increase the duration where you remain undetected while in stealth. It’s definitely an alluring trait for players who like to keep an assassin-like repertoire.

The Water Virtue also makes you more durable since it greatly reduces the Spirit cost of deflecting and parrying, a trait that’s quite handy during prolonged boss battles. Moreover, your ranged weapons often become a lot more effective when you level up the Water element.

The thing with all of these benefits is that they’re most notable once you stack multiple level-ups for Water, which is why (Spoiler alert) it isn’t wise to invest in Water early on in the game.

Metal

The Metal Virtue is a mage’s best friend. For one, the Spirit cost for any Spell is greatly reduced for each level-up. On top of that, you also improve your Spirit sustainability, making it so your Spirit gauge depletes a lot slower. Metal mostly scales the efficacy of your spells, which for Metal, consists largely of drawn-out magic curses and poison debuffs.

Earth

If you’re looking to improve your tankiness, Earth is the best Virtue bank on. Its benefits include a significant increase in your max equipment load, which means you can garner a little more Heavy Armor. Additionally, your Spirit gain for each deflected attack is increased. Since deflection is such a crucial aspect of Wo Long, it’s hard to progress through the game without investing a few level-up points into Earth.

However, if you’re looking at the single most useful Virtue to invest in during the early stages of the game, we would definitely recommend focusing on the Wood Virtue. The thing is, Wood offers benefits that span across all stages of the game. You’ll always run into scenarios where you would have clinched the situation had you invested a few more points into Wood.

Each Virtue offers its fair share of benefits, with selected drawbacks coming as part of the territory. While Wood is certainly the best Virtue to invest in early on, it’s important to not let one Virtue overshadow all others.
