What Are the Paths in Wartales?

A mercenary party climbing a snowy mountain in WarTales.

WarTales is an interesting mix of genres, bringing together the tactical importance of hardcore strategy paired with solid RPG elements. The system that exemplifies this is the Paths system.

Core to any playthrough, Paths both help you define the character of your mercenary party and give you access to powerful passives and buffs. Knowing how to progress each Path, and what the rewards are for each, can help you determine the trajectory of your game before you even leave the first area. The guide will describe each Path, the types of challenges they require to progress, and the rewards you can expect from progressing them.

What Are the Four Paths in Wartales?

The four paths are as follows:

  • Power and Glory
  • Trade and Craftsmanship
  • Crime and Chaos
  • Mysteries and Wisdom

Each path has a list of challenges that you can complete, each adding different amount of progress towards your level on that Path. Each time your path levels up, you will be able to choose a reward specific to that Path.

What Are the Challenges and Rewards of Each Path?

Power and Glory

Power and Glory is the Path of the righteous warrior, seeking to have the stories of their triumphs grow. For those who seek out fierce foes, and have a bit of a moral compass, this will be the go-to class.

The challenges for Power and Glory revolve around completing world missions, winning in the arena, blacksmithing, and showing mercy to enemies that have surrendered. Fighting as often as possible, while collecting materials to craft your arms, will quickly move you down this Path.

The rewards for this Path fall in line with the challenges. Blacksmithing will require fewer materials, will generate higher quality items, and can be sold for higher prices. Your mercenaries will generate more valor, and consume fewer resources. Both in and out of combat, the rewards from this Path center around making you a true warrior.

Trade and Craftmanship

This Path is for those that wonder why they bother protecting merchants when they can just BE the merchant. For those that like playing the ever-changing market, or who want to be an artisan whose goods sell for small fortunes, this Path will bring you to riches.

To progress this Path you must complete challenges that require you to cook and craft items at your camp, sell certain numbers of items, and consistently pay wages on time. Buying items at a discount helps as well, so keeping an eye out for good deals will be crucial to this Path’s progression.

The rewards for this Path are made to put money directly in your pocket. Your goods sell for more, while you can buy items for less. Your caravan can carry more goods from market to market, and you can even negotiate your party’s wages for a lower rate. Money is power, and this Path knows in what form you’d like to grow stronger.

Crime and Chaos

Crime and Chaos is your Path if you believe that a good number of problems could be solved with some good old-fashioned murder. Steal from shops, raid merchant caravans, take prisoners to do your bidding, this Path is made for those who just want to play the villain.

This Path progresses through dark actions. Stealing large amounts of material, taking people prisoner, generating suspicion and the eye of the local guard, all of these actions further the challenges in this Path.

The rewards gained will only help you commit more crimes. You can lose suspicion from the authorities faster, or have an easier time laundering stolen goods. Stolen items will sell for more, and prisoners will have a harder time escaping. The world is dark out there, and this is the Path for those who think it should be even darker.

Mysteries and Wisdom

For those who dream of exploring the world over, this is the Path for you. Mysteries and Wisdom is for those who want to know it all, every area, every animal, every plant, every recipe. If you would describe yourself as a completionist, this is the Path for you.

To progress down this Path, explore the world and pick up everything on the way. Discovering locations, catching animals, and picking up resources are all challenges on this Path. The study of alchemy is tied to this Path as well, and the creation and use of medicines, potions, and bombs will help with your progress.

The rewards from this Path are more varied than others. Gain the ability to travel longer, have wildlife become less aggressive around you, and grow less likely to develop an injury after a battle. The world is vast, and so are the rewards for this Path, meaning there will always be a reward that helps with your current goal.

It is worth noting that you can go down multiple Paths at once. While it’s better to focus on one, you will still be rewarded for completing challenges in other Paths. Play the game your way, with your goals in mind, and the Path rewards will come to you.
