We’ve all been there, a game gets too competitive, or a level is extremely demanding, so we push the buttons a little harder. Sometimes we realize what we were doing after the fact and feel sorry for our device. But, that’s completely normal, we’ve all done it, and we’ll probably do it again. So, should you be worried if you press the buttons on your Steam Deck a bit too hard? Well, according to many users, your device will be just fine.

Will the Buttons Survive Continuous Pressing?

Have you ever played a game for a while only to realize that you were spamming one particular button a bit much? You’ve probably experienced playing a game and suddenly becoming aware of that one repetitive movement. Once aware, there’s no way to stop noticing just how often you’re hitting that one button.

Well, one Redditor had that exact problem. Haunted_Willow noted: “To people who have had their Deck for a long time, are your buttons still working well? I get anxious pressing the A button so much (silly of me I know) so I’m wondering if anyone has had any issues or if your deck is still going strong. You hear when people have problems, but not when it still works well, so I’m hoping to calm my nerves”.

Steam Deck Users Reassure the Concerned OP

Well, Steam Deck didn’t get the Golden Joystick in the Best Hardware category for having bad buttons, that’s for sure. Community members gladly shared their experiences and explained why the OP shouldn’t be worried.

The majority of users didn’t experience any problems whatsoever and reported the buttons worked as well as they did on day one. One Redditor, foggiermeadows, explained: “Buttons are typically extremely reliable. The way these buttons work is there’s a plastic membrane with an electrically sensitive pad and when it contacts the board it registers the input. The only malfunction you’re going to have is the board directly, or the contact patch. And, unless you’re an elephant stomping on the buttons, they’ll likely outlive the electronics of the Deck”.

Another user, llibertybell965, added: “For the most part, buttons hold up pretty well as long as you’re not trying to baptize your controller in Mountain Dew or humming it at walls as hard as you can. If anything’s going to fail on the Steam Deck it will probably be the display, the battery, or the sticks long before the face buttons”.

You can relax and enjoy your games without taking too much care of how hard you press the buttons. Of course, if something stops working, you can always contact Steam Support, or change the button yourself. So, take it easy and press away, the buttons are quite durable.
