Have you ever thought that the animation when you start up your device is kind of boring? Customization is a wonderful way to express yourself, and Steam Deck is the perfect device for it, as you can even set up your own boot screen.
How to Change the Boot Animation
You’ve probably seen other people sharing videos of their cool startup screens. While this looks like it would require a lot of work, it’s actually quite simple. You can find numerous tutorials online, we’ve chosen one by paulperryvids. This YouTube creator managed to put the entire tutorial into a Short, that’s how simple it is.
This YouTuber noted: “The first thing you’re gonna do is hit the Steam button. Then go down to Power. And then Switch to Desktop. Next, open the Discover Software Center and search for Steam Deck repo manager. Install it and then launch it. Now all that’s left to do is find your new boot animation. Click Preview to see what they look like or Download to apply”.
Interestingly enough, there are ways to put way longer videos as the boot screen on your Steam Deck. One Redditor, Ein86, showed off a custom Scrubs intro. They explained: “Install Decky, then install the Animation Changer plugin. Manage animations, download what you’d like, select which one you’d like for Boot, and then go into Settings Customization and scroll down to select the local file”.
You Can Even Put Shrek as Your Boot Video on Your Steam Deck
Now, this whole story throws us back to a couple of years ago, when one incredibly genius Steam Deck user decided to put the entire Shrek movie as their boot screen. Mind you, this was before you could skip the boot animation.
The user in question, thstephens8789, shared their problem with the Reddit community. They noted: “Help!! I’ve set my boot video to Shrek and now I can’t use my Steam Deck until it’s over”.
This video lives rent-free in our heads. It’s probably one of the funniest things we’ve seen on the internet. And, reportedly, it caused the devs to put in the possibility of skipping the boot animation. Beavers4beer noted: “This is the reason we got the “press button to skip” boot video option. So it worked out for everyone in the end”. Reportedly, the patch notes that introduced this option noted “You know why”.
So, now that you know how to, would you ever put the entire Shrek movie as your boot screen on your Steam Deck? Truth be told, we’re thinking about it. Also, we truly appreciate this wonderful community and all the advice they give. Enjoy!
