Sometimes, there is no better feeling than returning to a game you played back when you were younger. Nostalgia can give you that wonderful feeling of safety and warmness. Aside from the technical stuff, story trends and progression also changed during the years. But, who can say if the oldies are better than the newer games? Well, it’s a tough call, no one knows that better than the Steam Deck users who got into a steamy debate over whether retro games were superior to modern ones.
Steam Deck Users Share Why They Prefer Older or Newer Games
One Redditor took to the Steam Deck community to confirm that their stance was commonly accepted. However, they were probably surprised to find out that not everyone agreed on the matter. Furthermore, some players had a completely opposite opinion.
The OP noted: “Does anyone else enjoy retro games more than current ones? Every modern AAA game feels like watching a mid-level film that I occasionally get to press a button to interact with. Give me Dawn of War, RTW, M2TW any day. I pray for the day they bring the PS2 LOTR games to Steam. Don’t care about the story, plot, or any of that nonsense. Games should be about gameplay”.
Obviously, many players agreed. However, there were players, like Economy-Ad5635, who wholeheartedly disagreed. This player said: “I’m the exact opposite, I have a hard time going back to some of my favorite retro games from my childhood. I know everyone is sick and tired of remakes, but I’m honestly living the good life with all of the phenomenal remakes”.
Now, the only consensus that the players managed to reach is that a good game was a good game, no matter whether it was just released, or extremely old. Pros of older games are usually better gameplay, better price, and all the nostalgia that comes with it. As for the modern games, well the visuals are simply amazing nowadays.
How Do You Define Retro Games?
Now, we found it very interesting that Steam Deck users had trouble pinpointing which games were actually retro. As you know, with all the technical progress, games in the ’90s, for example, were considered retro in mere years. A new device/software would drop, and the game would look terrible, or even be unplayable. However, in the last decade or so, although the technical progress is huge, it’s all about little details, and games from more than a decade ago still look and play well.
TCristatus noted: “Games that were released 3, 5, 10 years ago are still really popular, still being sold at a relatively high price when not on sale, and look as good as many 2024 games. Like, I was playing Tomb Raider 2013 the other day. It’s still one of the best-looking games on deck IMHO. But that’s the equivalent of comparing the PlayStation 2 in 2000 and Mega Drive/Genesis in 1989”.
Truth be told, we might be partial to the oldies, but we still enjoy a good visually stunning game. Let’s put it like this, we love both instalments of Red Dead Redemption. Of course, nowadays the variety of games is much bigger than it was back in the day. Also, you can find amazing deals, like the November Humble Choice which gives you a mix of newer and older games for the full experience. So, enjoy!
