The holiday season is upon us! As exciting as that is, it can also become stressful. There is a lot of pressure to choose just the right presents for your loved ones, as you want to get them something they’d love. One Steam Deck user shared their dilemma with the community, they wondered whether gifting their used device would be considered fine.

Is Gifting a Used Device Tacky?

Finding a perfect present can be quite tricky. So tricky that Actual_Bend_7316 had to consult the community to double-check if they were making the right decision. This Steam Deck user shared their struggle on Reddit.

This Redditor explained that they bought a Steam Deck LE, but they also owned a 1TB Steam Deck Oled. Since the latter became redundant, the OP thought about gifting it to their sister for Christmas.

They noted: “It’s still in great condition, no scratches, the original box, microfibre cloth is still in its plastic sleeve, unused. And I still have the cardboard sleeve that came around the case (unbroken). So if I give it a nice wipe down and put everything in the box, almost as new”.

The only dilemma that the OP faced was if it was okay to gift something that was used. They added: “I guess the reason why I might be hesitant, is I’ve never gifted something I used to own to family members before. And it’s never really been done in my family, but I know it’s a great gift and in really good condition”.

Steam Deck Community Supports the OP’s Idea

As you may have expected, the community was quite helpful, as they often are. Steam Deck users reassured the OP that gifting a used device was actually a good idea. Especially if it was in good condition.

DinosBiggestFan noted: “I don’t think any (genuine) gift is rude. I was always taught to be thankful for anyone who gives me a gift. It’s not about the content of the gift but the idea that I was thought of”. Another Redditor, jaybutuhhhhh, added: “It’s an expensive item. I know some would be upset but I feel like most would be perfectly happy new or used”.

Many community members agreed that if the OP’s sister wanted a Steam Deck, she wouldn’t mind it being used beforehand. Of course, some advised the OP to get her a Steam gift card alongside, or a warranty for the device. The Steam Autumn Sale is in progress, so if you know what someone loves, you can buy it in advance.

ElysetheEeveeCRX stated: “I’d absolutely add a fat Steam gift card to use with it. I think that’s probably the best route to maybe avoid even the tiniest bit of “Oh, they gave me their used stuff” vibes anyone could potentially have. I think it’s a good way to get them on their way with the console, though”.

In our opinion, as long as you are giving someone a well-thought-out gift it doesn’t matter if it was already used. Of course, always consider who you are giving the gift to, some people could have objections. Enjoy!
