Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is one of the most beloved video game franchises ever, inspiring a generation of skaters. As with many trends, the series eventually died off and became a nostalgic memory tainted by mediocre releases toward the end of its lifecycle. It did briefly seem that new life had been breathed back into the franchise when Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Remastered was released in 2020, remaking the first two games and bringing them to modern platforms.

Naturally, rumors of a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 began circulating shortly after, with Bam Magera’s brother leaking that he had been in contact with Activision to license CKY’s 96 Quite Bitter Beings for the game. However, Activision squashed those dreams when they disbanded Vicarious Visions and moved them to assist other studios with their projects. After three years of disappointment, there could be some light at the end of the tunnel as Tony Hawk has revealed that he is working with Activision on a new project.

During an interview with Mythical Kitchen, Tony Hawk detailed his history of working with Activision and how the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series began 25 years ago. When asked about how the deal came about, Tony Hawk revealed that he had been pitching the idea for a year to numerous publishers with no success.

“Before I signed on with Activision, even like a year before that, I was pitching a skate game and just came up against no interest,” he said. “In fact, some people were actually scoffing that we would even consider making a skateboarding game. I think one quote was, “Skateboarding isn’t even popular, why would we make a video game with skateboarding?””

Thankfully, Activision saw the potential in creating a game based on the sport, and the rest is history.

I was still down to do whatever, but. But because I had been attending all those meetings, my name was kind of in the ether of video games. And then within a year, I got a call from Activision, and they said, hey, we heard you’re trying to do a skate game. I was like, well, kinda. And they said, we are doing a skate game, and we’d love for you to come see what it’s about.

The 25th anniversary of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is around the corner, with the first game launching on September 29th, 1999, and it has been revealed that the pair are collaborating on a new project.

“I can tell you that I have talked to Activision again, which is insanely exciting. We’re working on something. That is the first time I’ve said anything publicly,” Hawk revealed. However, when pressed about whether it involved him skating, he replied saying “I can’t give any detail, but it won’t be that.”

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that this new project is the previously canceled Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 Remastered, but instead is a celebration of the franchise. However, with the popularity of the first remake, and if this project is received well, many fans, including myself, are still hopeful that it could eventually lead to the PS2-era classics being remade.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 saw the series jump to the sixth generation, with much smoother gameplay, fresh mechanics, and one of the best soundtracks in the series featuring artists such as CKY, Motorhead, The Ramones, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Xzibit. This was followed by the fourth entry, which IGN called “by far the best skateboarding title around.”
