Following a gameplay demonstration conducted by Eiji Aonuma and released by Nintendo this morning, we now have a pretty solid idea of the features we’ll see introduced in the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
While these all-new features are game-changers, there are still a few elements from past titles that we would love to see make a comeback in Tears of the Kingdom this May.
Here are five things we want to see make a return in Tears of the Kingdom.
Zelda as a Playable Character
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the possibility of Zelda serving as a payable character in Tears of the Kingdom since the sequel to Breath of the Wild was first announced.
While Princess Zelda has not functioned as a playable character since the spin-off Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, long-time fans of the franchise are crossing their fingers for her return. Given Zelda’s significance in the story trailers we’ve received for Tears of the Kingdom, it’s entirely within the realm of possibility that we may finally be able to play as the princess.
This theory is further corroborated by the fact that Zelda is shown using a Shiekah Slate in one official game trailer, much like the one Link used in Breath of the Wild.
Hopefully, this is an indicator that we’ll see Zelda take on the role of a key playable character with the release of Tears of the Kingdom.

Dungeons
For those who have been playing the Legend of Zelda titles since the first game’s debut in 1986, the return of dungeons would be an excellent callback to the origins of the franchise.
While the Shrines we encountered in Breath of the Wild are functionally similar, dungeons offered more elaborate opportunities to exercise gameplay strategies and utilize in-game features.
Since at least four all-new abilities have now been confirmed to be available to Link in Tears of the Kingdom, dungeons would be a great way for us to make creative use of each.
Champion Abilities
In Breath of the Wild, we were introduced to the new Four Champions: Revali, Daruk, Urbosa, and Mipha. Each was well-received among franchise fans, and we’re now hoping to see them make their return in Tears of the Kingdom with the use of their unique abilities.
Fans have conducted polls amongst themselves to determine which of the Champion Abilities they’d most like to see. In order, these were the results:
- Revali’s Gale
- Mipha’s Grace
- Urbosa’s Fury
- Daruk’s Protection
With the confirmation of all-new abilities that will be accessible to Link in Tears of the Kingdom, the use of these Champion Abilities would be a great way to take the game-changing feature one step further.
Voice Acting
Voice acting was expertly introduced to the Legend of Zelda franchise in Breath of the Wild, adding depth that we want to see continued in its narratively rich sequel.
This addition to the games was greatly appreciated by players, both new and old, as the voice acting was localized to cutscenes that drove the story forward, lending voice to the characters we’ve come to know and love at long last.
Since Tears of the Kingdom is more or less a continuation of Breath of the Wild, we’re expecting to see voice acting return in a big way.

Cooking
Cooking was an important gameplay feature in Breath of the Wild, so it’s more than likely that we’ll see it return in Tears of the Kingdom.
Both practical and fun, cooking helps to keep the overall tone of the game lighthearted without sacrificing the strategic elements that popularized the franchise.
Given Link’s newfound abilities, we can’t help but wonder what kinds of meals we’ll be able to make this time around.
While the return of these features is purely speculation, there is still much to be revealed in Tears of the Kingdom, and we’re hoping to see at least some familiar elements.
