Should You Invest in Non-Ultimate Versions of The First Descendant Characters or Not?

In TFD, some characters have two variants: a regular one, and an Ultimate version. In all respects and purposes, the Ultimate version is the better one. It has better stats and access to special Transcendent Mods. The downside is that it is way more difficult to unlock Ultimate Descendants than the regular ones as the drop rates for Ultimate Descendant parts are considerably lower. But still, is it worth bothering with the regular Descendant if you are planning on unlocking the Ultimate version?

Should You Bother With Regular Descendants?

There are two sides to this coin. The majority of players say that investing Crystallization Catalysts and Energy Activators in characters that you can get the Ultimate version of is a waste. Both of those enhancement items are rare and valuable, and spending them on a character that you’ll stop using once you get the Ultimate version is not the best move. “The Ultimate versions are a straight upgrade. They all have higher defensive stats and additional transcendent mod options. So if you have access to both versions, you might as well build the better one.“ said chrsjxn on a Reddit post discussing this topic.

Alternatively, others advocate that you should upgrade the characters you are using the most since chances are you’ll get more Catalysts and Activators by the time you unlock the Ultimate version. What everyone agrees on is that you should invest in Bunny since she’s the ultimate farming character, and you’ll be using her to grind for the character parts. “I have about 800+ hours and my suggestion would be invest some in normal bunny (if you dont have the ultimate) That will make it easier to farm ultimates, weapon levels etc. once you are comfortable with bunny build then i would say farm ultimates and invest in those. You will save a lot of resources that way. “ said taofeng.

There Is Hope For the Future

There is one remedy to this whole situation and that is allowing players to “transfer” their upgrades from a regular Descendant to their Ultimate version, once they unlock it. The bad news is that it isn’t possible at the moment.

Fortunately, the decision between investing in regular or Ultimate Descendant will not be that critical in the future. During one interview shared on Inven (a Korean website), Nexon was asked “How do you plan to provide motivation to play as regular Descendants?”, they answered (big thanks to CarpenterContent2349 and Karzak85 for providing translations):

“This is an important issue that needs an update. The intention was for players to experience and use regular Descendants first and then move to the ultimate ones, but since they pale in comparison to ultimate Descendants, most players tend to wait for the ultimate versions. Although a concrete solution hasn’t been decided yet, it might involve applying the growth of regular Descendants retroactively when upgrading to ultimate Descendants. “

So, in conclusion, yes, you should invest in non-Ultimate variants (unless you’re moments away from unlocking the Ultimate). While we don’t know exactly how and when Nexon will implement the “transfer” feature, it is great knowing that they are planning to do so.
