“We Need a Visual Cue” One Group’s Pleas Fall on Deaf Ears in The First Descendant

There are so many ways you can gather materials in The First Descendant. You can get Gold and Kuiper as a regular drop from defeated enemies and you can get more valuable stuff by opening Munitions and Resource Boxes. And who can forget the infamous Encrypted Vaults, the ones you can either find by accident, or by listening to an audio cue when scanning with your Ecieve? The whole audio mechanics is pretty cool (albeit a bit frustrating), but it doesn’t take one thing into consideration: what about the hearing-impaired players?

Hearing-Impaired Players Are Virtually Unable to Find Encrypted Vaults

When it comes to finding Encrpted Vaults, the players with hearing problems got the short end of the stick. They have difficulties, or are straight-up unable, to hear the audio cue you get from your Ecieve that will lead you towards the Encrypted Vaults and those valuable crafting materials. They have to resort to looking for Vault locations online, and while helpful, it is not the best solution.

This is discussed in a Reddit post, started by GH057807. Players note that there is nothing that can help the hearing-impaired players in the game. The only “Accessibility” option is the Colorblind Mode. Some players with hearing difficulties give their two cents: “As a hearing impaired, I just look up maps. It definitely adds time to my grind and kind of sucks that there isn’t a visual” said kypirioth, and PositiveEffective946 added: “It is not easy. I am hard of hearing (not deaf but only 70% hearing) and I have to really blast the tv up when I am doing these which is not healthy for anyone else in the house…”

Players Beg For a Visual Cue

There is a very simple solution to this issue: adding a visual cue would work wonders. Granted, it would kinda ruin the general idea the devs have for finding those Vaults, but absolutely everyone would be happy with the change. “Yeah they should have a visual cue to help with the hearing impaired.” said midnightsonne. Even players with no hearing issues would welcome it.

A lot of players farm while listening to music or something similar, and they have to turn everything down in order to look for Encrypted vaults, as Administrative_Loss9 said: “I sometimes listen music while farming and can’t hear the beep and end up stopping music. That nonvisual signal bugs me alit”. User Gripnslip offered: “It should pulse an outline of the vault when pinged to help everyone out. I’ve had a hell of time locating these things even when they’re placed almost in plain sight. Hopefully something addressed in season 1”

But, one of the best “middle-ground” solutions players offered is to at least give Enzo, the best Descendant for Vaults, a visual cue. User Eraevn said: “I feel like a temporary half measure should be that Enzo should have the visual cues or highlight the vaults. It’s not perfect, but he mostly exists for the vaults, so why wouldn’t he make it easier to find them as well as making it easier to open them.”

We understand that Nexon wanted Encrypted Vaults to have a special mechanic, and that is completely fine. However, all of the game’s content should be accessible to all players. If a player is unable to hear the ping, they can’t just “do better”, it is not a skill issue. Having them rely on plain luck (or other players) to find Encrypted Vaults is not a solution. We do hope Nexon does something about this in Season 1, or at least in the near future.
