Lowering the Difficulty of New Content May Result in More The First Descendant Players

The reasons why you play a game like TFD can be varied. You can be a casual player, there to have a good time, or a hardcore gamer, looking for the next challenge. It is great when a game offers you both options – there is something for everyone. But, if the game forces tough content, it may end up chasing many players away. Nexon recently released an update that nerfed and simplified many things in TFD, especially Invasion missions. The majority welcomed these changes, but some are against these changes, stating that the game is unchallenging.

Overly Difficult Game Content Can Turn New Players Away

One player, named KharonXLVI on Reddit, shared their story and an “unpopular opinion”. They start by stating that they have everything almost maxed out and over 600 hours in the game. Even so, they tried to get some of their friends into the game but the Invasion missions proved too tough for them and they weren’t enjoying it. So much so that they quit the game altogether.

“I like that the devs are focusing a bit more on their more casual player base and not just the sweats. I just want the game to last long. And on Aug 29, they went from about 63k players to 34k in a few hours. The same day 4 of my friends quit the game and haven’t touched it since. “

They finish by saying that while challenging content is great for those hardcore gamers, Nexon shouldn’t lock new characters (and similar content) behind overly tough missions. A middle ground is the best.

Both Ends of the Spectrum Should Enjoy the Game

More players join in with their own experiences. User Tzarkir said: “I have the same experience as you. Got two friends in the game, we play together but especially one is getting progressively demoralized. He wanted Hailey, but can’t farm her…I like challenging content and especially new mechanics. But THE SEASON being the hard content is not a good choice, cause new players get the idea they can’t do anything worthwhile until they reach the (high) level of the others.”

The consensus is that players would love to have the general content accessible to everyone, with hardcore modes for hardcore players. “There needs to be both. A game needs new players as well as veterans that continue to play. New players will become veterans if the game is good but if there isn’t anything to challenge us then we’re all going to leave.” said TheJeffyJeefAceg. “I 100% agree. The game needs a permanent challenging mode, but it also needs some stuff that people can enjoy without maxing out everything.” added crankycrassus.

Thankfully, Nexon is working on this. In the commentary concerning the latest update, which reduced the difficulty of the Invasion missions, they said they are preparing more challenging game modes, for those hardcore gamers. “…in the second update scheduled for October 10, we plan on introducing Infiltration Operations of the highest difficulty.”
