Is There a Power Creep in The First Descendant? Players Discuss the Future of the Game

The First Descendant Ajax and Bunny walking

The First Descendant is in a good spot now. The latest major update was a success (albeit, with some bumps in the road, which are thankfully fixed), the players are happy with the new character, and the excitement for the next major update is high. But, players started noticing that the newest Descendant, Hailey, is pretty strong. She can even dish out more damage than Ultimate Descendants. So, the community wonders if this will be a trend with every new character. Will there be a power creep in The First Descendant?

Still Too Early to Say

Up until now, we had two new characters added to the game. The first was Luna, who turned out to be, well, not that great. The second was Hailey, who is quite powerful, in terms of raw damage. The question is if Hailey was such a success will Nexon make every new character stronger than the last, to entice players to get them? “[They are] going to keep power creeping new descendants as they come out to try to get people to buy them so they can use the latest OP character.” said one player.

For now, one out of two characters proved to be stranger than the rest, which is not that worrisome. Now Ultimate Freyna is on the way, but she is hardly a character that deals in raw damage. The issue is that, for now, the game does revolve around damage dealers, so that pushes other characters away from the spotlight.

Other Characters Need to Shine As Well

What the players advocate for is that other, non-top-tier-damage-dealers need a place in the game. “It just feels like 90% of the character pool is falling further and further behind…” said Detpowell, in their Reddit post on this subject. Others propose that adding mechanics that will make other characters shine is the way to go. “…where a stealthed Sharen can disable security or something to lessen the amount of mobs or something. Give tanks a taunt, please. Maybe add an actual Magister vault that you have to break into with Enzo…Literally anything besides just running around and killing stuff fast.” said Caliele.

Power Creep Is Inevitable

Unfortunately, some level of power creep is practically inevitable. New characters have to shine in a way, to make them stand out from the existing characters. Unfortunately, if the focus of the game does not change, this will boil down to more damage.

“This is just power creep, and pretty much every MMO has to deal with it. Fact is, nobody likes nerfs, so all they can do is buff the others to keep them in line with new characters. Similarly, enemies and content will have to increase in difficulty as the game progresses, so as to not get boring…Power creep is kinda inevitable, but the devs have to stay on top of it, and buff weaker characters in a timely manner so as to not draw too much criticism from the players.” said JesusIsDaft.

The next update and Ultimate Freyna will soon be here, so we will see in what direction will the game go.
