There are quite a lot of numbers and different stats in TFD, but the downside is that some of them are not explained properly. Sure, we can calculate how many Skills can we use before running out of MP, simply based on our current MP maximum and each Skill’s MP cost. But some other stats, like DEF are left pretty vague. There is no in-game explanation of what DEF does, except that it reduces the enemy ATK. But for how much? What is the target number we should strive for?
Your DEF Shouldn’t Go Above 20k
The higher your DEF the more damage you resist, but how much is too much? At certain points in TFD, your DEF has diminishing returns, ie, the effect is not proportional to the amount you increase it by. Some dedicated players have done the math and the majority agrees that you shouldn’t bother with increasing your DEF beyond 20.000. That will give you around 45-50% damage reduction. For comparison, having the DEF of 60k will only increase your reduction to about 60%. Not much of an improvement for triple the numbers.
So, unless you’re tanking damage for the whole team, you should invest in more HP when you get close to that 20k mark.
Most Players Are Happy With 10k
Some even go so far as saying that you don’t need more than 10k DEF, since that reduces upcoming damage by 40%, which is quite enough for the majority of Descendants. As it stands, having more HP is better than investing in DEF.
“There’s no soft cap, more def is always more damage reduction. But you’re deep deep into diminishing returns territory. The number crunchers are mostly recommending 5k defense, no more than 10k, unless you’re on a descendant with a specific skill synergy with more def. You can replace a lot of that def with more HP, damage reduction, element immunities, or almost anything else and come out ahead.“ said Heroic_Folly.
The players are aware that DEF is not that important right now and have voiced their concerns time and time again, asking the devs to make it more relevant. You can easily get DEF to 10k, so everyone defaults to buffing their HP after that, which we don’t think was the original idea by Nexon. Since they are implementing small fixes quite often, we may yet see DEF getting some love in the near future.
