In The First Descendant, the general rule is the more DPS your weapon does, the better. You can’t go wrong with that. Fans argue about some details, as some are ok with lower rates of fire but greater damage, while others like the opposite. Arguments like these are present in every game with similar mechanics. But, in TFD, players found something that outshines and is stronger than any weapon. No, it is not the power of friendship. And no, we are not talking about Kyle’s glitched mechanics.
Never Mess With a Gas Tank
You know those gas tanks that you find scattered around? The ones that we all ignore, shoot for the fun of it, and once in a while use to blow up some Vulgus mobs. Yup, it turns out they pack a greater punch than you’d expect.
In one video posted by xF00Mx on Reddit, you can see that the player has a maxed-out Thunder Cage, with over 550.000 DPS. They then proceed to fight a Commander spawned by an Abyssal Void Fusion Reactor. Naturally, the boss is tough and only takes small amounts of damage from Thunder Cage. But, all of that changes when the boss approaches a single gas barrel. The player shoots a single bullet at a gas barrel, triggering an explosion, that takes out almost half of the boss’ total HP.
The players were quick to add some pretty funny comments. Away-Barnacle-9388 said: “Now I want to know what mods that gas tank has been using.” You can get comments like “I want to get a gas tank an upgrade as my primary.” and “high dps builds?! nah…where the explosive barrels at?!” And our favorite is from Total_Middle1119: “Hank Hill would be proud”, referring to the main characters from the King of the Hill animated series.
Why Do Gas Tanks Do So Much Damage?
With jokes out of the way, the question arises: why are gas tanks so powerful? You’d expect that gas tank explosions are useful at the beginning, but get weaker and less relevant as you progress and start facing more powerful enemies. The answer seems to be: percentage damage. As No_Specialist9129 promptly explained: “Gas tanks do setup percentages of damage it’s not defense or element based like guns”, and Deaftoned added: “…They seem to be percent based true damage with falloff depending on range.”
Gas tanks and similar items are usually an afterthought in most games, there to go ka-boom, and maybe deal some small amounts of damage. It is refreshing to see that TFD thought about it, and decided that their gas tanks will remain useful regardless of what Level or difficulty you are playing at.
