The gaming world is so vast that it is hard to create something that is 100% original and not even similar to an already-existing game. Many developers take inspiration from other games to create their own. In the case of TFD, we all know that it is predominantly inspired by Warframe and Destiny 2, but with its own twist. However, that inspiration can go a bit further than expected, and during the earlier stages of TFD, fans called Nexon out for using the exact same icons as Destiny 2 and Warframe for some of their Skills. It was quickly changed into something original, and we all thought it was the end of it. But now, in the reveals for Keelan posted a few days ago, the fans noticed that The First Descendant devs are borrowing from another franchise again and called them out. Nexon promptly changed it.
Nexon Once Again Borrowing From Another Franchise for The First Descendant Skill Icons
We recently got a teaser for Keelan, a new Descendant that’s about to join the roster, showing us his Skill descriptions and bits of his “lore”. What some keen-eyed fans noticed is that one of the icons looks very similar to an existing one from a different franchise. Specifically, the icon for Keelan’s Septic Gust uses the absolute same design as Death Blossom, the Ultimate ability of Reaper from Overwatch. Only the head is changed.
However, Nexon was quick to change it. On November 28, they posted an updated version, saying “The icon for Keelan’s Septic Gust skill has been updated to its finalized version, replacing the early in-development version.”
“They All Use the Same Library”
The fanbase is split on this. Some are calling them out, asking how difficult it is to make an original image, or stating that this has already happened before. “Its not even just similar, it’s actually the exact same with a few slight deformations lmao I can’t defend this one,” said Berry-Flavor and “That’s exactly close to 1:1. The hooks are identical. Even with the small little flames. For something as simple as icon design. Why the [heck] are they doing this?” asked SpagettMonster.
On the other hand, others defend Nexon, saying that it came from a free asset pack that a lot of games are using. “I mean the majority of the games skills were directly lifted from a lot of games like Destiny and Warframe as I recall. They took free assets and just used them.” said ItsAmerico, and “The drama that TFD copied Destiny 2 skill icons at launch is caused by the same reason: they use the same icon library. And it strikes again it seems.” added RoyAodi.
However, some fans point out that this icon has been a part of Overwatch for years and years, and that Blizzard usually does their assets “in the house”. Quite a convoluted situation.
In any case, is it a big deal? No really. Is it a bit funny? Yes! As we saw, Nexon probably used it as a stand-in and forgot to change it before posting. But you’d think that after the first “plagiarism” situation, Nexon would know better. In any case, no harm no foul, just a ridiculous situation.
