There are several different mission types that you can do in TFD. They all usually boil down to defeating waves of enemies one way or another, but they have different approaches. Infiltrations and Special Operations are pretty straightforward, and Outpost missions are a bit different. You can either go in guns blazing or try a more stealthy approach for extra rewards. But, whatever method you choose, the rewards are hardly worth the effort.
The Outposts Are Not Viable in the Current State
For Outposts, you can either fight a bunch of enemies while trying to destroy three power cells or sneak in (either with Sharen or with a weird alternative method) and disable them manually. Whatever the case, you’ll have to fight a commander in the end, and defeating it will grant you some rewards. The problem the players have with all of this is that rewards are not that great, especially the drop rates for Amorphous Materials.
One player, named SloppyCandy on Reddit, said: “But Outposts? 30 seconds of mindless gameplay mixed with a minute of downtime. [Bad] EXP. No matchmaking. God forbid you need a stealth reward because you then have to switch to 1 specific descendant, and hope some other person doesn’t come along and [ruin] your stealth runs (which THEN you need to swap instances/go to private). All this for an ~~80%~~75% chance to NOT get the amorph”
For the record, Duty of the Descendant missions (those “final stage” ones) have a guaranteed, 100% drop for Amorphous Materials. On the other hand, Outpost missions have a 20% chance of dropping one (and we all know how “20%” works in TFD).
Mechanics Get Stale Quite Fast
The “positive” side of the Outpost missions is that they are fast. You can finish them in 30 seconds. But, these are the only missions that have a “downtime”, ie, you have to wait one minute before doing them again. This does not sound like that big of a deal, but then you realize you’re doing the same thing over and over again. Clear the outpost in no time, get those rewards, wait for a minute, then do it all over again. Not really engaging, when you think about it.
“Yes the drop rate is frustrating, but it is the gameplay loop that is the real issue. It is boring and not fun…I just want the activity to be engaging and not some <1 min activity to kill an elite, followed by a 1 minute wait, only to rinse and repeat. It is so pointlessly un-fun.” said der_Mechaniker.
In conclusion, the whole mechanics needs a rework. “Outpost gameplay loop is just bad. They have mitigated it best they can for now. But it absolutely needs to be reworked from the ground up.“ said TheBetterness. As it stands, they are best done only if you are passing by, and we seriously doubt that that is Nexon’s idea for Outposts. Unfortunately, they have a lot more pressing matters to attend to, so we doubt we will see some updates soon, at least not before the October 10 update.
