If you’ve been following along with the development of Rise of the Ronin, you might be wondering if its related to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Let’s take a closer look at both games to answer this pressing question.

Rise of the Ronin is primed to release this March, mirroring many of the Soulslike elements featured in publisher Team Ninja’s past titles. While the studio’s latest project incorporates several difficulty settings to tailor your gameplay experience, diverging from the subgenre’s standard, Rise of the Ronin hasn’t managed to escape comparisons to Activision and FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Given that the 2019 title was dubbed Game of the Year, these perceived parallels bode well for Team Ninja’s upcoming release. But, are the two games actually related? Here’s what we know.

Rise of the Ronin – PlayStation 5
  • Haptic feedback: Feel the impact of combat as you clash blades and trade blows with haptic feedback through the DualSense wireless controller.
  • Adaptive triggers: Experience the tension of your bow string and the click of your matchlock rifle’s trigger through the DualSense wireless controller’s adaptive triggers.
  • Tempest 3D AudioTech: Become immersed in the sounds of Bakumatsu-era Japan – from the hustle and bustle of the capital’s streets to the tranquil sounds of nature as you traverse the landscape with 3D spatial audio.*
  • Ultra high-speed SSD: Get straight to the heart of the action with the PlayStation5 console’s lightning-fast load times.

Despite perceived similarities, Rise of the Ronin isn’t related to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The former is an upcoming title from Team Ninja, the studio that brought us Soulslike games including Nioh and Ninja Gaiden. Sekiro, on the other hand, was developed and published by Activision and FromSoftware, revolutionizing the budding Soulslike genre upon its release.

Granted, Rise of the Ronin doesn’t quite fit within this gritty subgenre, thanks to its implementation of several difficulty settings. As a side note, Sekiro offers none — it’s just obscenely hard. However, the Soulslike elements present in Team Ninja’s newest game are the reason so many gamers have drawn parallels to Sekiro ahead of its launch this month.

In the 2019 title, you take on the role of a warrior in Sengoku-era Japan. This is similar to the premise of Rise of the Ronin, an action RPG set in the Bakumatsu period. Apart from this, though, the two games are visually very much the same, and the 2024 title is anticipated to feature combat mechanics that resemble those of Sekiro, to boot.

All things considered, the two titles may not be related, but many are calling Rise of the Ronin the next Sekiro in the making. We’ll see how these parallels play out at launch this month. For more on Rise of the Ronin, check out these guides from our team:
