Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has earned its place as one of the best summer game releases for the second time around following its recent expansion to PC earlier this week. Previously exclusive to PlayStation 5, the action-adventure title is driven forward by an exciting narrative which centers around the series protagonists, none other than Ratchet and Clank themselves. While the game’s campaign is relatively short, it certainly packs a punch with the help of its main characters. If you’re new to the series now that it’s available on PC, however, you might be unfamiliar with the dynamic duo. Here’s what you need to know.
Ratchet
The first of the pair of protagonists in the Ratchet & Clank series, Ratchet is a cat-like alien creature known as a Lombax. Since the series debuted in 2002, his backstory has unfolded quite a bit with each mainline entry, though he has been known to have endured a notably tragic upbringing. Native to the planet Fastoon, Ratchet was sent away to the planet Veldin by his father when the Lombax species was attacked. He knew nothing of the compromise made by his family until the series progressed.
Joined by Clank, Ratchet later became an unlikely hero with a desire to explore the furthest reaches of the galaxy. Alongside his partner, Ratchet has developed his strengths as well as the will to save his family as an act to repay them.
Clank
Clank is a small, green-eyed robot created by Drek and his mother, a computer who held an inordinate amount of resentment toward the Chairman. Much like his partner Ratchet, Clank has overcome a series of hardships, which have progressively been explored with each game entry. The tiny bot managed his first victory after learning Drek’s production plans and ultimately escaped to safety.
Clank’s creation story doesn’t end there, though. After teaming up with Ratchet, it was revealed that Clank had a secret guardian of sorts. A skilled Zoni by the name or Orvus bestowed a soul upon Clank. His creator continues to watch over him on his adventures alongside Ratchet.
