PlayStation 5 is one of the most popular consoles out there, with PS5 Pro being arguably the best gaming console on the market. That one only has a slight problem of a steep price tag. Moreover, there are talks that Sony wants to make a portable gaming console. Sure, they have PlayStation Portal, but it is more of a portable streaming device than a proper console. But, while the new handheld is in development, some dedicated folks beat them to it. A group of Chinese Modders made a custom PlayStation 5 Laptop. Unfortunately, it does have a couple of downsides, and the most glaring one is the teeny tiny cost of $2,750.
A Group of Chinese Enthusiasts Made a Custom PlayStation 5 Laptop
The word is circling the community: it is possible to make a PS5 portable. Just not in the way you’d expect. A group of modders from China combined PS5 hardware with a custom-built exterior and a powerful display to create a PS5 laptop, and called it “BBook AI Original Edition”.
It has all the components of the regular PS5:
- AMD Zen2 8-core processor
- AMD RDNA2 36CU GPU
- 16GB GDDR6
- 825GB PCIe 4.0 Storage
The trick is that all of this is encased in a custom 3d printed “chassis”. The issue with that is that it is a big one, sporting a thickness of approximately 31 millimeters and weighing more than 4 kilos. For reference, that is almost the same as the whole PS5 console, and that one is triple the size.
To add insult to injury, it does not come with a battery. There is an external adapter that has to be constantly connected to a power source. Not very portable if you are bound to a power outlet. And we must mention that it is very loud. Reports say that the noise it makes is around 71.3 decibels, which is the same as a standard vacuum cleaner.
On the other hand, it does boast a pretty good screen. It is a 17.3-inch, 4K, 60Hz IPS display, meaning you can run the Game of the Year 2024 without issues.
Lastly, the creators agreed that the hypothetical price of this would be 19.999 Yuan (or approximately $2.750). However, the creators are not interested in selling the original product, so whether this laptop would ever be produced for sale is a question. Sources: Weibo and Videocardz.
Sure, it is easy to talk this laptop down. But, it is essentially someone’s passion project and the original creator did manage to turn PS5 into a laptop. We are all guilty of overspending on the stuff that we truly love, so, however wired and highly impractical this PS5 laptop is, hats off to the original creators for managing something like this.
