Handheld consoles have been with us for decades now. Almost everyone had (or had a friend who had) a Game Boy back in the ‘90s. The scene is dominated by the regular, “tabletop” consoles, but in the last couple of years, handhelds have risen in popularity, with Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck dominating the market. Handhelds are great for the majority of gamers today as not everyone has the space and resources to make the most out of a regular console. Add the fact that you can game during your daily commute, be it for work, school, or anything along those lines and you get why handhelds are getting more and more popular. And let’s not forget that they have better and better specs with each new release (Steam Deck is easily more “powerful” than a lot of mid-tier PCs). But now, it looks like Sony is planning to dominate the handheld scene as well.

Sony is in the Early Stages of Developing a Handheld Console

The news is all over the place. As Bloomberg reports, Sony began to develop a portable console of its own with the intention of rivaling Nintendo and Xbox, their main competitors.

According to developers, Sony plans to extend its reach into the handheld market, to outshine Switch and any possible handheld Xbox consoles that Microsoft may release. However, “Sony’s portable device is likely years away from launch and the company could still decide against bringing it to market, the people said, asking not to be named discussing private plans.”

Sony already has a handheld console, but PlayStation Portal was not as successful as they hoped. It was more of a device where you streamed your PS5 games to, than a full-blown handheld console. Sure, it got an update that allowed PS+ Premium users to play games on the go via cloud technology, but it is still a far cry from the regular handheld console. So, if Sony really commits to this new console, we may actually see a rival for Nintendo Switch. A healthy competition can be very beneficial.
