It is no secret that Silent Hill 2 is getting a remake, which is right around the corner. Scheduled to release on October 8, the devs promise to stay true to the original as much as possible while upgrading the game with modern technology. On October 1, Sony released an article to show us some comparisons between the original and the Remake.
The Silent Hill 2 Remake Looks Incredible While Staying True to the Source
In the most recent blog post, Sony shows us how Bloober Team and Konami have remade the infamous Flesh Lip boss fight and Laura, the little girl you meet in Brookhaven Hospital. And of course, minor spoiler alert for those who want to experience everything in the game on their own.
Starting with Laura’s introduction scene, the devs have basically kept everything the same, story-wise. The dialogue and what happens are almost identical to the original game. Unsurprisingly, the major change is in the visuals. With more than 20 years of technological advancements, the changes are obvious. Laura looks almost like a live actor in the game and the devs had this to say: “Full-body motion capture, used in conjunction with detailed animation, has allowed us to make these characters come alive through subtle facial expressions and gestures.” You can almost count the little threads on her sweater.
As for Flesh Lip, the boss battle itself has been greatly improved. In 2001, when the original Silent Hill 2 was released, the technology of the time and the game’s engine didn’t allow for much of a dynamic combat system. The fight was with two Flesh Lips in a small room. For the Remake, the whole fight has been reworked. Now you’re facing only one Flesh Lip, but in a larger room, to better accommodate the combat mechanics the Remake has. The fight itself is way more dynamic, with different phases and types of attack, encouraging players to switch between melee and ranged weapons. The gist of the fight is the same but the mechanics are way better now. You can watch the whole video here.
The devs are deadset on staying true to the game and that is commendable. “We hope this manages to convey our approach towards the whole game, which emphasizes the original’s strengths and seeks to expand upon them while staying true to the game’s spirit.” With just a couple of days until the release horror fans everywhere are in for a treat.
