It is a known fact that the PS5 Pro has a steep price tag and is generally intended for the most dedicated (or well-off) PS fans. The initial reactions were not as positive as Sony hoped, but over time, when the dust settled, fans started to realize how great PS5 Pro actually is. And one of the best games to show that are the Horizon games. Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster and Horizon Forbidden West games are the best examples of PlayStation 5 Pro upscaling feature, say experts from Digital Foundry.
Digital Foundry: Best Upscaling on Consoles Can Seen in Horizon Games on PlayStation 5 Pro
For clarity, upscaling is the process of enlarging images without them losing any quality. In video games, that translates to improved visual quality due to the artificially generated pixels that help render the image in a higher resolution. PS5 Pro features PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), which is an AI-driven upscaling tech, but the team behind the Horizon franchise, Guerilla Games, took it one step further. They introduced their own upscaling solution which is featured in Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster and Horizon Forbidden West, and the results are out of this world.
Digital Foundry, a popular hardware YouTube channel, made a detailed review of both of these games. It was hosted by Alex Battaglia and Oliver Mackenzie, and they commented: “The two Horizon games on PS5 Pro feature some of the most impressive upscaling quality we’ve seen.”
“We hope Guerilla shares this information internally, with other studios…it led to a game that is otherwise, without anti-aliasing probably extremely messy-looking…there’s a lot of super high-frequency detail, the game is always moving, and they managed to clean that up extremely well,” said Alex.
The fans join in saying that the Horizon games have the best graphics you will see in a video game. However, some are adamant that Death Stranding 2 will knock it out of the park, when it releases.
It is commendable that a studio decided to make their own upscaling solution, rather than use the one provided by PS5 Pro, in an effort to present their games in the best light possible. Kudos to Guerilla Games for such a feat.
