It’s here and it definitely did, um, something! The long-awaited update of the original Dying Light, the Retouched Update, dropped on June 26. This update was first announced back in January during the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the game. So, was it worth the wait, or should the devs go back to the drawing board?

What Is in the Retouched Update?

Well, first things first! In the latest dev blog, the Dying Light Franchise Director, Tymon Smektala, pointed out that this wasn’t a remaster. This update was meant to enhance the game. The Director stated: “So, let’s set the record straight: the Retouched Update is about squeezing out even more from the Dying Light you already love. It’s not a complete overhaul or remaster”.

As for changes? The devs enhanced the visuals and remastered the soundtrack. The patch notes revealed all the changes:

  • Higher resolution textures.
  • Upscaled skyboxes & clouds.
  • “Ultra”- level quality shadows.
  • Fully remastered soundtrack from the original composer, Paweł Błaszczak.
  • New tracks and ambient themes added to the game.

In other words, if you take a moment and look around, you’ll see many more details. Everything looks less blurry. You can see the obvious difference between the “before” and “after” in the picture below (from the dev blog).

Dying Light Players Appreciate the Update but Don’t Really See the Difference

Let’s be honest, the before and after pics are obviously quite different. However, the Dying Light fans pointed out that they only noticed the difference that the Retouched Update made when they were standing still. With the game being quite dynamic, these details didn’t really matter all that much to the majority of players.

Rizenstrom explained: “It’s mostly just higher resolution textures, so you won’t really notice or appreciate it unless you’re up close and staying still. But if there’s minimal performance impact, why not? The notes also mentioned audio changes, so that might be more noticeable for most people”.

Of course, if you are among the highly devoted players, you’ll probably appreciate these changes much more than an average player! AdmiralSparrow noted: “If you’ve played this game since release, you probably would be able to spot the differences. I bought it year 1 and played it religiously. They may seem minor, but when combined together, they just improve the experience”.

Maybe it’s time to return to Harran and check out the changes for yourself? Of course, if you’re looking for something different yet equally captivating, we suggest the freshly released Death Stranding 2. Furthermore, if you haven’t tried them yet, both Clair Obscur and Monster Hunter Wilds are on sale! So, whichever game you pick, have fun and enjoy.
