Recently, there has been a lot of talk about Sony working on their own handheld console. They already have PS Portal, but that is more of a streaming device than a full-on handheld. This time, allegedly, they plan on releasing a full-blown handheld console, able to run PS games on it. And it seems that Digital Foundry, a respectable hardware analyst, already heard about the new PlayStation Handheld Project “months ago” and “from a couple of sources”.

Digital Foundry Already Heard About PlayStation Handheld

During the most recent DF Direct Weekly, the Digital Foundry team discussed various topics, among which the mention of Sony’s Handheld console project. On that topic, DF admitted that they “heard about this handheld some months ago, from a couple of sources.” They continue saying that the fact that there are now rumors flying about only serves to confirm what they heard back then.

Will it Run PS5 Native Games?

While we can’t know for certain, everything points towards this new handheld not being able to run PS5 native games. A question arose will Sony be able to shrink all the tech required to run those games to a handheld size, knowing that they are still not able to make a “truly slim console”. According to Digital Foundry, this is not going to happen. What we will most likely see is a device capable of running PS4 games without issue. But, we can’t expect Sony to patch PS5 games, to “worsen” them, so they can run smoothly on a handheld device. What we’ll most likely get is something like a low-end PS5 console that can run PS4 games without issues, and some PS5 games as well (but not the more demanding ones).

For now, this is only pure speculation. But, it all does make a lot of sense. It looks like the handheld is well on its way, in terms of development, so we’ll most likely have some more news in the near future. And be sure to listen to the whole video, as there is a lot to hear.
