Black Myth: Wukong was released in August 2024 and was widely praised by critics. The initial sales were record-breaking, selling over 18 million copies in just two weeks. The game is inspired by Jurney to the West, a classical Chinese novel, and the protagonist is unsurprisingly based on Sun Wukong, the Monkey King.
The game is a success, with both the gameplay and the visuals getting lots of praise. Another important fact is that the game fully respects the original story and the Chinese culture as a whole. This is unfortunately not that common, as many games today do like to take a lot of liberties with their source material. Game Science stuck to their guns and the results speak for themselves. The video game industry in China predominantly focuses on mobile games, so Black Myth: Wukong surprised everyone. It is even categorized as the first triple-A game from a Chinese developer.
With all that in mind, the game isn’t even two months old but we already hear talks of a DLC. It has to be a good one to go toe to toe with the original game.
The DLC for Black Myth: Wukong Will Take Some Time to Finish
To be able to follow in the footsteps of the base game, the DLC Black Myth: Wukong will need more time to develop. According to Daniel Camilo, a trusted game consultant: “Game Science CEO Feng Ji (Black Myth: Wukong) clarified today that DLC for the game will take a long time to be ready, in order to meet the high quality standards of the game.”
The initial expectations were for the DLC to be released somewhere around the Chinese New Year (end of January). That would give the devs less than three months (from the day of writing) to finish it, and for a game like Black Myth: Wukong, that is certainly not enough time. What we may see around the Chinese New Year is an announcement or a teaser for the DLC, and maybe some special event-only items. But, for now, the DLC for Black Myth: Wukong is still far away.
