“It’s the Scalpers!” Fans Angry With the Shortage of External Disc Drives for PlayStation 5 Pro

PlayStation 5 Pro console next to a crossed out external disk drive reader

With the release of PlayStation 5 Pro just a couple of days away, the fans realize that they can’t get their hands on any external Disc Drives (aka Disc Readers), and unsurprisingly, they are pretty angry with this shortage.

When PS5 Pro was announced, we saw that it was digital-only, ie, it comes without a disk reader. You have to get the external one, for approximately $80. This sparked debates on the future of console gaming and the gradual transfer from physical to digital. Moreover, it led to a massive shortage of external Disk Drives for PlayStation 5 Pro, which obviously made the fans very angry. The only ones happy with this are the scalpers.

A Shortage of External Disc Drives for PlayStation 5 Pro Made the Fans Very Angry

When Sony released PS5 Slim, they also released an external disk reader. Furthermore, that same reader could be used for PS5 Pro, and when the console was announced back in September, more and more players ordered a disk reader in advance. Unfortunately, it looks like the supply couldn’t keep up with the demand, and the closer we get to the PS5 Pro’s release, the chances of finding a disk dive for sale are getting slimmer.

One player from the UK asked on Reddit for someone to send him an Amazon link to get one, but the others only had bad news. “You won’t find one in the UK yet… eBay is about the only place you’ll find them now for double RRP but I refuse to pay that instead hoping for a restock on the run up to Christmas…” said notemark, and “Yeah man I been looking everywhere and [no way I’m] paying the scalpers lol” added the OP.

Only Scalpers Profit From This

The regular retail price for a PS5 Disk Reader is about $80, but the eBay deals that we managed to find sell them for about $120 or $130, plus shipping. In the UK, the regular price is around £100, while the prices on eBay go from £180 to £260.

This has led to some people believing that the scalpers intentionally bought as many of these Readers as possible, knowing that the demand would skyrocket. “Once scalpers realized the Pro would create new demand for the disc drive, they went crazy for it. You’ll probably have to wait for the hype to die down,” said HaouLeo.

It seems that this problem is predominantly in the UK, as the gamers from the US say that you can still find PS5 Disk Readers with some bigger retailers. Whatever the case, it looks like Sony didn’t expect that so many players would want a Disk Reader. Unfortunately, this means that a lot of gamers who pre-ordered PlayStation 5 Pro will be unable to use their physical games until the Disk Readers are back in stock. Hopefully, they will not have to wait long. Being simply unable to use your physical games on a premium-priced console would make anyone angry.
