How to Take Hostages in Payday 3
Taking hostages has its advantages in Payday 3. While you can’t tie up officers, you can target any civilian by pointing your gun and shouting to force them onto the ground. This is done with the middle mouse button on PC or Up on the D-pad of your console controller. Firing your gun at any point in the process will trigger the alarm system and alert those waiting outside.
Once the civilian is on the ground, you’ll have two on-screen options:
- Take as human shield
- Tie up hands
Tying the hands of the civilian will allow you to take them as your hostage and trade them off later. It’s in your best interest to tie up civilians sooner rather than later if you do intend to make an exchange down the line. Hold the F key on PC, Square on PlayStation, or X on Xbox to accomplish this.
On the other hand, using hostages as shields requires the same control input, but produces different results. Security guards and police will be less likely to shoot you if you’re shielded by a hostage. However, you may risk being attacked on high-tier assaults.
How to Trade a Hostage in Payday 3
You can trade hostages during the action phase in Payday 3. When the alarms sound and you don your mask, you’ll sometimes be given the option to trade off hostages in exchange for goods, like med packs or ammo, or a few minutes to plan your next move without the threat of assault from armed forces.
Trading a hostage starts with targeting a civilian. Use them as a human shield, then shove them. When you approach this same hostage once more, you’ll then have the option to tie them up. This prompts a new directive: Trade Hostage. Each utilizes the same control input — F on PC, Square on PlayStation, and X on Xbox.
Once you’ve chosen to trade your hostage, the negotiation phase will initiate. This is your chance to score more time for your teammates or any necessary resources.
That said, you’ll want to avoid killing any hostages or officers during this time. Otherwise, the peace call will be nullified and officers will assault you. You can effectively avoid this scenario with the Stockholm Syndrome skill, which allows you to instantly trade one hostage in the event of an assault. To master trading hostages with minimal casualties, you can also practice during the Crowd Control tutorial.
