Longtime Call of Duty players are gearing up for the launch of Modern Warfare 3 next month. With it, many are now wondering: Is MW3 replacing MW2? Stick around for an answer to this burning question.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is primed to launch this November on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. It promises to revisit the campaign started in MW2 and continue its events. Those who played the previous entry will have a leg up over others. That is because much of the game’s content can be transferred to the next title in line. This includes items like weapons and skins, as well as your hard-earned CoD points. That said, many franchise fans have some concerns about the Carry Forward feature, which implies that MWIII might replace MW2. Here’s what you need to know.
- Some features may require online subscription
- Pre-Order and Receive Early access to the Open Beta – first on PlayStation*
- ADAPT OR DIE IN A FIGHT AGAINST THE ULTIMATE THREAT
- IT’S TIME TO SETTLE OLD SCORES AND START NEW ONES
- ALL NEW OPEN WORLD ZOMBIES
Is MW3 Replacing MW2?
At the time of writing, it looks like MW3 will be a standalone game in its own right. While many of the items and skins you’ve earned and purchased in previous entries will be eligible to transfer over to the next installment, your progress won’t be scrubbed from the past games. This means Modern Warfare III won’t effectively replace MW2 — at least, not in a literal sense.
Concerned players have taken to Reddit to discuss whether the hours they’ve spent playing MW2 will essentially be lost following the release of MW3. However, Activision has quelled the chaos for the most part. This is in part thanks to a blog post detailing the game’s Carry Forward feature.
With the help of Carry Forward, you can transfer much of the content and progress you’ve made in previous entries to MW3. That said, this doesn’t erase what you’ve accomplished in Modern Warfare II or Warzone. Rather, it offers you a head start in MW3 should you choose to transfer eligible items, unlocked Operators (but not Base Operators), bundles, CoD points, calling cards, weapon progression, loading screens, and more. All of your cosmetics will still be there, such as blueprints, attachments, weapon stickers, vehicle skins, weapon camos, mastery camos, and weapon charms and emblems.
What Does Not Transfer?
Unfortunately, Wartracks will not transfer between these two versions. Also, if gameplay features are different in Modern Warfare III than in MW2, naturally, they will not transfer. For example, if there is no Tactical Amphibious Vehicle, or a specific Tactical or Lethal Equipment, any Skins you’ve unlocked for it in MWII won’t transfer. In the end, you’ll still be able to play the previous entries as well as MW3.
