How To Keep Mercenaries Happy in Wartales

A mercenary party walking through the rain in WarTales.

Being a mercenary in WarTales is an exhilarating experience, but not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Long journey’s through driving rain, furious locals, and dangerous wildlife; there is much to make a mercenary’s life hard. As such, keeping up Morale and Happiness is paramount to maintaining a successful party.

Thankfully, there are several ways to keep party members happy in WarTales. This guide will walk players through the ins and outs of happiness.

What Are the Best Ways To Keep Mercenaries Happy in Wartales?

The best ways to keep a player’s mercenaries happy are:

  • Pay wages on time
  • Feed the mercenaries enough, and include alcohol in the meal
  • Assign units to the campfire and keep it lit

Mercenaries accrue unpaid wages after every three rests. Paying them immediately upon the third rest keeps them happiest. Choosing not to pay them as soon as possible will generate more unhappiness for each rest that passes without pay.

To rest, players must also prepare a meal for the mercenaries. The amount of food required is dependent on the number of mercenaries in a player’s party, as well as the diets of each member. Feeding them enough will prevent unhappiness from growing.

Including food items like alcohol and some high-quality dishes can also add extra happiness. When adventuring out, players should make sure to stock up on food items, having enough for multiple rests, as well as making sure they have at least one happiness-boosting food per rest.

Assigning a mercenary to sit at the campfire when resting also generates bonus happiness. When making the meal, players must simply add logs to the fire to keep it burning. Only one log is required per rest. It is suggested to carry at least five logs on any journey.

Other methods generate happiness, such as the results of certain traits or random events for a player’s mercenaries, but those methods listed above are the most consistent.

What Does Happiness Do in Wartales?

Happiness has several benefits for the mercenary party based on the level of happiness:

7 Happiness: The party’s maximum number of valor points increases by one
15 Happiness: The party benefits from a +15% experience boost in combat
Any Happiness above 15: Generates five influence points per excess point of happiness

Increasing maximum valor points is a direct buff to combat effectiveness, so happiness should be prioritized. +15% experience is also a pretty hefty buff, making it much easier for players to level new party members, or to reach higher levels. Players should plan their journeys accordingly, making sure to generate enough gold to maintain wages, as well as making sure to carry enough food, to consistently keep happiness at a high level.

What Happens if a Mercenary Party Is Unhappy in Wartales?

If the mercenary party’s overall happiness reaches -5, party members may begin defecting. Having members leave the party can be brutal, as players will also lose the gear the mercenary had on them. Reaching -5 happiness does require quite a string of bad luck, so with proper planning, it should be easy for players to maintain positive happiness.

This guide should give a player a huge head start on keeping their party members fed and happy. Given the direct effect on combat effectiveness, planning around happiness is a must for any new player. With a happy party, high levels and more battle wins await.
