If you can’t hear enemy footsteps in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, then you’ll get finishers and executions done to you multiple times a game. The game does not provide the perfect audio setting to hear footsteps, you must do it yourself.
We’ll show you how easy it is to take advantage of a simple method below.
How To Turn Up Enemy Footstep Sounds in MW2
You can increase the audio of footsteps in MW2 with these volume settings. Just go to audio and then volume to find this menu.
- Audio Mix: Headphones Bass Boost
- Master Volume: 70 (this one depends on how you like your volume)
- Music Volume: 0
- Dialogue Volume: 20
- Effects Volume: 100
- Hit Marker Volume: 50
- Speakers/Headphones Game Sound Device: Default System Device
- Mono Audio: Off
The most important settings are Effects, Mono Audio, and Audio Mix. You want the bass boost because footsteps have a lot of bass, and you’ll be able to hear it better if you boost it.
Mono audio tends to favor gunshots over quieter sounds like footsteps. You won’t hear footsteps if the Effects level is set to 0, as it modifies the sound of footsteps (among other things). The community has its own ideas, but we believe this paired with Loudness Equalization for PC is the best overall.

How to hear enemy footsteps in Modern Warfare 2 on PC
PC players can set up Loudness Equalization, making it much easier to hear footsteps in Modern Warfare 2. To turn your Loudness Equalization on:
- Locate the sound icon on the bottom right of your PC’s screen.
- Right-click the icon and then select Sounds.
- A new window will appear. Click on the Playback tab
- Go to your primary sound source and left-click it.
- It can be your speakers, your system, your default, or even your monitor/TV if it has a speaker.
- Select Properties.
- Go to the Enhancements tab
- Scroll down until you see Loudness Equalization. Make sure it’s checked.
Loudness equalization makes sure everything is around the same noise level. This will make louder noises quieter but it will make quieter noises, like footsteps, louder.
You can also keep enemies from surprising you by having teammates ping enemies they see, so they won’t be able to surprise you as easily. If you want more news, guides, and originals, stay on N4G Unlocked!
