How Do You Add More Mercenaries to Your Party in Wartales?

The inside of an inn in WarTales.

Your mercenary band in WarTales is a cohesive unit, with party members that use their strengths to offset others’ weaknesses. The bigger the band, the more strategies that can be covered, meaning that hiring more mercenaries for your band is never a bad idea.

While the game does upscale difficulty in certain modes if you have tons of mercenaries, it never hurts to have six to eight in a party.

At the game’s start, your party will consist of four members and a pony. There are a few ways to add more if you’d like your party to grow. Each method comes with its benefits and drawbacks.

This guide will walk you through the ways you can hire more mercenaries so that you can build whatever type of party you deem fit.

How Do You Add More Members to Your Mercenary Party in Wartales?

There are several ways to acquire new members:

  • Hire new members at an Inn
  • Pay for a prisoner at a Jail
  • Catch a wild animal
  • Acquire through a random event or quest

How Do You Hire Mercenaries at an Inn?

At any Inn there we people sitting at tables or leaning on walls around the room. Talking to them allows you to inspect their class and stats, and gives you the ability to hire them. Hiring mercenaries in this way costs a number of Krowns and Influence as payment. Once they have been paid, they immediately join your party as new mercenaries.

If you don’t like any of the mercenaries for hire, simply come back to the inn after a few in-game days. The roster of mercenaries for hire changes, so you will be given different options over time.

How Do You Hire Prisoners at the Jail?

Hiring prisoners at the jail works similarly to hiring mercenaries at the Inn. Simply visit the local jail and offer to pay for their freedom. Mercenaries you free from jail are cheaper but often have more negative traits. As such, this method of growing your party should only be used if you are low on cash.

It is also possible, though rare, for you to gain a prisoner as a party member after capturing one. On the way back to the jail you can offer to free them, and there is a small chance they will join your party as thanks.

How Do Animals Become Your Party Members?

Animals can be added to your party if you catch them during battle, rather than killing them. A player must have a rope, the target must be below 50% health, and a party member must be flanking the target. This will give you the option to knock out the animal and capture it, thus adding it to your party.

Animals don’t act like other party members, instead acting on their own as friendly AI. A level five or higher Beastmaster can control them, but otherwise, they will act of their own accord during battle.

How Do You Get Party Members Through Quests or Random Events?

Sometimes during quests or random encounters, NPCs will offer to join your party. The conditions of their joining depend entirely on the situation. Some will have to pay, some will have to be saved from illness, and there are many reasons why they might join.

Having a good amount of Krowns and Influence as your journey may help you be more prepared for these instances, but there is no surefire way to know when these events may occur.

You should now be prepared for every instance of hiring new mercenaries. Whatever the size of your party, they should be more prepared to take on all challenges if you take care in hiring the classes that suit your group.
