We all heard the news that Sony is planning a Helldivers movie. But, what everyone is worried about is whether will they manage to capture the satirical tone and message of the game, or ruin the whole thing, as many video game adaptations have unfortunately done. In that regard, some players came to the idea that it would be awesome if an in-game camera was added, to make our own Helldivers 2 footage.
Having an In-Game Camera Would Bring So Much Fun to Helldivers 2
As Helldivers is predominantly inspired by Starship Troopers, we all know that scene in the movie when the soldiers invade the planet Klendathu and the reporter says the iconic line “It’s an ugly planet! A bug planet!” before being eaten alive by the Arachnids, all while being filmed by a cameraman.
Having an in-game camera, to recreate similar scenarios, and crate many more, would be an awesome addition to the game. Sure, you can already record your games via various recording apps, but an official in-game camera would be way better. It would also create footage from the Helldivers’ perspective, rather than the “over the shoulder”.
One player, named StayAtHomeDadVR on Reddit, recently shared their own idea about this. “1. Give us the camera to record amazing things. 2. We will create viral moments over the next 8 months. 3. Put some of those viral moments in the movie. Extras: if you extract with camera you can watch the film back on ship tv; let us insert footage into someone’s ship tv and start playing it”. Similar mechanics are not unheard of, as many online games automatically record their matches (“Replay” and “Play of the Game” features, for example), so Arrowhead wouldn’t have to come up with anything new.
Players Add Their Own Ideas
More players chimed in to add their own ideas. Some want the camera to give some passive boosts to Helldivers being filmed, while others, like Dav3le3 had the idea of a special Press Armor set: “Photography and Recording Expert Serviceman’s Suit; This armour is specialized for camera operators on the front. They provide real footage from heroic divers spreading democracy on the front lines. Equipped with gyroscopic stabilizers in the joints. Light armour. Eliminates weapon sway while standing still. +2 stims.”
If not a “weapon”, the camera could also be a Mission/Secondary objective. “I like the idea of a mission using this. Such as you need to film a helldiver in action for x seconds at each location marked for an upcoming inspirational movie, or a recruitment drive, or something. Almost like a flag raising but someone needs to operate the camera.” said FacE3ater. Of course, there is always a risk of players taking things too far and not properly contributing to the game, but it’s not something that the players can’t handle.
The idea of a camera in Helldivers 2 has been circulating in the community in the past and has even been leaked several times. Unfortunately, nothing was done about it. But, an addition like this would undoubtedly increase player activity. And, as already mentioned by the OP, the camera would surely attract “roleplay people”, who’d take this to the next level. Here’s to hoping we get something similar, at least.
