The devs are really cooking with this one! The Singularity party is less than 24 hours away, and the dev team may have dropped a huge hint about how it’s going to play out. As you know, the community ARG (alternative reality game) is in progress, and the latest Beowulf clue chilled the Helldivers 2 community to its core.
How Does Beowulf Fit Into Helldivers 2?
You may or may not be aware of it, but Arrowhead devs love a good reference. Sure, Orwell’s books (especially 1984) have obviously inspired the devs, and you can probably find several details related to these masterpieces. However, this time, the devs were inspired by quite a different literary piece. This one dates all the way back to the 10th century AD.
Beowulf is an epic poem about a hero named Beowulf. The king of the Danes, Hrothgar, calls upon Beowulf to help fend off the long-lasting attack on the mead hall, Heorot. Grendel, a monster, has been attacking Heorot for twelve years. Beowulf fights Grendel and wins. However, Grendel’s mother takes revenge, but she’s also ultimately killed.
How does this all play into Helldivers 2? Well, as you probably know, there is an ARG in progress. The community follows various instructions while trying to solve the mystery of what has happened to Station 81. One of the decoded passwords was “Heorot”, as in the mead hall from the poem of Beowulf.
So, let’s draw out those parallels. Obviously, Helldivers would be Beowulf. Super Earth could be Hrothgar, the king whose mead hall is under attack. The Illuminate vanguard would be Grender, the slain monster. That means the rest of the Illuminate fleet would be Grender’s mother, coming for revenge. But, where? Could Widow’s Harbor be the mead hall?
However, that wasn’t all. One player, qwertyryo, noted: “The ARG has just delivered its newest piece of info from verses 81-83 of Beowulf: ‘The hall towered, its gables wide and high and awaiting a barbarous burning’. Ominous”.
Helldivers Have Plenty of Theories
As you may have expected, once they looked into it, Helldivers came up with plenty of ideas about what will happen during the Singularity Party. Spoiler alert: all of these end up in some sort of massacre.
One player noted: “It seems that we’re going to get hit first at Heorot (Widow’s Harbor), once attacked by Grendel during the last stages of the Illuminate raids. What leaves me thinking is that Beowulf history only starts with this, Hrothgar getting help of the hero, and to vanquish Grendel’s mother Beowulf and his men need to cross a dark swamp full of terrors (like night, more or less as said by Melisandre), only to nearly be anihillated by Grendel’s mother and saved in the last second by a new weapon”.
Another player, TrueScottsmen, added: “My theory is that we’ll discover Super Earth is already under attack. They’ll have made some sort of FTL jump blocker that we’ll have to destroy on some planets outside of Earth first, while racing against the clock in an attempt to reach the planet before it falls”.
Only time will tell, but it looks like we’re in for quite a mission! So, use the remainder of the current Major Order to practice your aim and slowly get in the spirit for what awaits. This community needs something big after the disappointment the players felt after the latest Warbond announcement. Let’s do this together, side by side. For Liberty and Super Earth.
