Helldivers 2 players want 5 Stratagem slots kept in the game

Helldivers 2 Stratagem Destruction

Stratagems are a key part of the Helldivers 2 experience, with them being used to call down weapons to use and to rain down barrages of missiles and rockets onto hordes of enemies. Without them, the game would be a different experience and many would agree that it wouldn’t be as fun.

U/LongDongFrazier took to the Helldivers 2 sub-Reddit to suggest that increasing the Stratagem count to five should be kept in the game saying “I feel like I can really flex my load out knowing I have more wave clear/anti-tank at my disposal.”

Usually, players can choose four Stratagems to take with them on a mission in Helldivers 2. But, Arrowhead does periodically grant an extra Stratagem to use. These are set Stratagems that are either used to promote upcoming ones or to highlight ones that are less used such as the Orbital Gas Strike that helped players see the potential use case.

This was recently done to give players a chance to try out the Orbital Napalm Barrage. The Helldivers 2 community failed to unlock it after more than half of the player base decided to not take part in Automaton missions which left the Major Order target of 500 million Automaton kills approximately 20% short, with the final figure hovering at around 400 million bots eradicated. However, the response to the new Stratagem has been extremely positive, so I suspect many are regretting refusing to deviate away from the Terminids for a few days.

It would be interesting to see how choosing five Stratagems would change the meta, and how it would affect the difficulty of missions. But, Arrowhead could instead select one Stratagem per week to highlight, which would give players five to use but in a more controlled way. This could end up shaking up the meta if players discover use cases for previously overlooked Stratagems.

This idea could also be used to test out future weapons, buffs, and nerfs ahead of them going live in an update. By doing this, Arrowhead could gather feedback from the community about a change before fully committing to it. Had the developers done this in the past, it may have saved a lot of the backlash that has caused Helldivers 2 to drop in player count, with the game regularly dipping to below 10,000 concurrent players. But, there is hope that things could be about to turn around as the developers announced a 60-day roadmap to rectify many of the issues in the game, particularly regarding nerfs. The first update is set to go live on September 17th and is said to have 6-8 pages of patch notes, so we can expect dozens of changes to be made.
