Players report that Arrowhead might have stealthily curbed unwarranted kicking in Helldivers 2

Getting kicked out of a dive for no good reason has been part of Helldivers 2 since the early days. This often happens when matching with randoms, but has been a particular problem when it was used as a griefing tactic. Getting rid of someone who’s trolling or not pulling their weight for no obvious reason is one thing. But kicking a player out of some malicious fun has never been okay, and it looks like the game now has a way of circumventing that. While there’s no official confirmation, some players have begun noticing a pattern.

It looks like just kicking someone from the group is not as effective any more

The matter was put forward by SignifigantZebra on Reddit, who posted the following: “Spent the majority of a match saving everyone from Hulk and Gunship attacks. We lose like 11 lives fighting over a heavy outpost that somewhere in the confusion, we forgot we already wiped it out. Eventually, I ask if we can just leave because this is a waste of time, so we do. We go back to extract, and whoever the host is, kicks me just as the Pelican is landing. To my surprise, everyone disappears, and I get to just pick up their samples, and leave. Guess s**theels will have to find some other way to grief.”

This could’ve been written off as a glitch or an isolated incident, if not for other players coming forward to share similar experiences. For example, SpaghettiParty shared their story: “Ahh so this is intentional design? This happened to me for the first time maybe 2-3 weeks ago while running a Tesla build with 2 other divers at lvl 70ish and 80ish. I really try not to throw my Tesla towers in bad places that will kill my teammates and this time was no exception. The higher level diver walks into the range of a very obviously placed tower nowhere near an objective or POI and dies. I write in chat you have to crawl to get your stuff or obviously destroy the tower. Dude runs right to his stuff, dies again. I destroy the tower to stop this cycle of stupidity. Not 10 minutes later both teammates walk blatantly into range of a tower on an elevated hill, an area they did not need to walk near for any reason other than wanting the same elevation I guess? One bolt zaps ‘em both dead. I kill my tower again and ask them what are they doing? Next thing I know they both vanish, I finish the drop solo and at some point during this I get the impression I was kicked. Sucks to be them I guess.”

Denibus had another similar situation: “Good job AH I didn’t know this. I was a little confused today when mid-fight everyone else disappeared. Ended up winning that mission with some new teammates.” Now, this could easily be confirmation bias, but it does seem that something is going on. Where before you would be sent back to lobby after getting kicked, now it seems that the game splits the dive into two instances, allowing you to keep playing. If you end up alone, you can just call in an SOS to bring more divers to help you out.

Remember, kicking for no reason is never a good way to play. Making room for your friends is okay but needs to be communicated. However, kicking just for kicks – that’s just griefing. We’ll end on another related comment, from Saagri: “I don’t usually have a problem being kicked but last week I was kicked for “leeching” because I joined a game at extraction. I’ve also had a few other instances of random kicking recently. It’s more of an annoyance at this point but they were all equally as dumb. I am confused how much this popped off. Thanks for listening to my rant.” No matter what the reason, always remember that there’s another human at the other end.
