Helldivers 2 Players Divided on How to Deal With a Team Kill

If you’ve ever played Helldivers 2, or any game with similar dynamics, you surely experienced friendly fire. Maybe it was accidental, perhaps it wasn’t, but is revenge the right solution? Some players wondered if there was a correct way to deal with a team kill in Helldivers 2.

Team Mates Should Support Each Other, Not Kill Each Other

A player, mrrangg, took a strong stance. They said: “Just because you get TK, doesn’t mean you have to turn around and then TK the other player. We all know this game has friendly fire, which makes for some hilarious and precarious situations. But for the love of god, if your teammate TKs you, 9/10 times, it was probably accidental”.
Some players shared how to avoid the vendetta of an accidentally killed teammate. A fan, thatguy01220, said: “Most of the time I use the emote I’m sorry or they will say sorry and I just say affirmative, and we both get back to it. Killing someone over friendly fire just shoots yourself in the foot”. Another player, psyopsolete, explained their tactic. They said: “When I accidentally TK I always make sure to reinforce immediately. I feel like that’s the clearest message that it was an accident”.
Also, it’s important to know the intention behind the kill. BobR969 said: “Rule of thumb – once is an accident. Twice is also potentially an accident. Three times, you need to point out what’s going on. Any more than that, it’s open season for retaliation”. Most people agreed that in a fast-paced game, accidents happen, and it shouldn’t be a big deal, but if it occurs over and over again, you might want to adjust your reaction. Goldreaver explained: “Once is a happenstance. Twice is a coincidence. Three is an anti-democratic action”.

Some Helldivers 2 Fans Would Rather Blame the Evolution

Not everyone agreed on the subject. One Redditor, trainstationbooger, said: “Unfortunately you’re fighting against psychology at the deepest level on this one”. They meant that through evolution, selfish defection was always more rewarding than cooperation. Applied to this scenario, the person getting the revenge will have more pleasure from that act than from forgiving their offender.
Most fans felt relief, but others expressed their doubts. Zealousideal-Pear-34 explained: “Fortunately we are humans capable of logical reasoning, communication, and forgiveness”. Another player, zxDanKwan, was against the idea of using evolutionary mechanisms as a justification. They said: “Sure if you want to do things the “easy” and “right” way, I guess”.

This topic truly poses a moral dilemma. Sure, we all get frustrated, but in the long run, forgive and forget is the way to go. After all, you play the game to relax and enjoy yourself, not to take out your frustration on the others. Also, two Helldivers 2 players trying to kill each other during a mission can ruin the experience for the whole team. We can all benefit from some sportsmanship behavior.
