“Much to Learn, You Still Have” Players Side Against a Fan Who Claims Helldivers 2 Could Be the Next Star Wars

Helldivers 2 Vs. Star Wars

Sure, Helldivers should get their own version of the Death Star soon, at least they hope so. With all the changes and the hard work the devs have put in, the game is in better shape than ever. That will certainly bring in some new Helldivers 2 players, but could this game, or the Helldivers franchise, ever become bigger than Star Wars?

Could Helldivers 2 Become the Biggest Franchise?

One extremely devoted Helldiver shared what they called their “wildest take”. This player believes that with a little work, Helldivers 2 could surpass Star Wars. The OP noted: “Lore in Helldivers is there to support the game. But, it’s been so well written and engaging, that we all ended up being completely immersed in it”.

As all Helldivers 2 fans know, the lore in this game is simply amazing. Players love the details that the devs leave for them to find. However, some people forget how insanely big the Star Wars universe is. Episode IV: A New Hope was released in 1977, which means that this universe has been expanding for 47 years.

The OP added: “I think that with some care, movies, books, and spin-offs, that build up on the HD universe, it could become a behemoth franchise in the future. I see it as a middle ground between Star Wars and 40k, where it can be appealing to a big audience, while still keeping its niche and general vibe”.

Of course, this player is well aware of all that could go wrong, and how this expansion could actually ruin the game for some of the original players. They mused: “It is a double-edged sword, as bigger franchises tend to mean bigger costs and licensing fees. On one hand, we could get more incredible content, and games with budgets allowing creatives to go absolutely crazy. On the other hand, we could end up with quickly slapped-together microtransaction hells, baby gronks, and gambling machines”.

Helldivers Recognize Star Wars Fame as Unachievable

Even though this kind of enthusiasm is, and should be, greatly appreciated, many Helldivers gave the OP a reality check. Many Helldivers grew up with Star Wars. For many, Star Wars was the first contact with science fiction (Space opera, if you will). Many players discovered their passion for sci-fi just by watching these movies. So, of course, they had to remind the OP of the impact that Star Wars has had on so many people.

LostInTheVoid_ explained: “I think you underestimate just how huge SW still is. It’s an IP that in 2ish years will be 50 years old. Most of the fans are still kicking and still spending on the merch. Helldivers also has a bit of an issue of being so very similar to Starship Troopers that you’d possibly end up with a case of films or TV media being almost too similar to carve out a place in a very competitive market”.

Another player, aslatts, added: “Yeah Star Wars is like the 4th or 5th highest-grossing media franchise in history. The Helldivers IP needs to crawl before we can start talking about it winning an Olympic medal”. One Redditor pointed out the most important detail. They said: “The game is fun, but it’s also very derivative. Don’t really feel they have an interest in building an intricate world, more like having satiric fun”.

We’d agree with that last point especially. Even though we’d love for Helldivers 2 to reach incredible heights, the fact is the devs probably aren’t interested in that. As far as we know, the idea was to create a fun game for players to enjoy, and so far, the devs are doing a wonderful job. So, join us on the bug front, we hear there might be a Gambit planet that will help us deal with this Major Order. For Liberty and Super Earth.
