Staying cool under pressure isn’t easy, especially when that pressure is in the form of an alien army. So, naturally, when things inevitably go south, it’s easier to blame something (or someone) else than admit that the enemy is simply stronger. Funnily enough, the blame usually falls on Helldivers 2 players who prefer fighting one faction exclusively – the bugdivers.
Who Are the Bugdivers?
As you know, this game has three enemy factions: the Terminids (bugs), the Automatons (bots), and the Illuminate (Squids). However, the Second Galactic War started off with only one enemy faction, while the other two joined later.
So, at the very start, Helldivers and bugdivers were synonymous. The Second Galactic War started when the bugs that were being farmed for E-710 got out of control and “rebelled”. Helldivers were sent to stop them.
Soon after, the Automatons arrived. Now, the approach to these two factions is quite different. When you fight bugs, you just go and slay as many as you can. On the other hand, when you fight the bots, you need to strategize a bit. So, slowly but steadily, the player base started splitting up based on the players’ preferences.
The first bigger dispute happened when the Helldivers fought the bots on the Creek. Some players didn’t really care, so they stayed on the bug front. That was the beginning of this whole “problem”. As the time passed, botdivers kept calling out the bugdivers for refusing to help over and over again. At some point, it seemed like the community united for the MOs on the bug front, but split for the MOs on the bot front. Frustrated, the botdivers started ignoring the bug MOs, and the gap between the factions only grew.
The situation became even more complicated when the Illuminate joined the war. Three enemy factions meant that even more MOs were lost. And then, the Heart of Democracy update brought the fight to Super Earth. The number of players skyrocketed, but tens of thousands of players keep fighting on the bugfront instead of Super Earth.
All Helldivers 2 Players Have the Right to Play However They Wish to
Obviously, everyone should try to join the bigger cause. That’s just fair. But, it’s also fair to say that anyone should enjoy the game they play however they want to. Just because some bugdivers aren’t fighting on Super Earth, doesn’t mean they are any less of a member of the Helldivers 2 community.
Now, we completely understand the frustration. We’re all for fighting for the bigger cause, and we’ve spent countless hours on Super Earth. However, if someone comes home after a long day and starts up Helldivers 2 to get rid of the everyday stress, they should be able to enjoy their time off without being harassed for it. Even if they’re on the bug front during the Battle for Super Earth.
Remember, even if Super Earth falls, we’ll get it back. But we won’t get back the players who were bullied into quitting. So, instead of taking out their frustrations on the bugdivers, the rest of the Helldivers 2 community should redirect those frustrations and fry some more Squids. We’ll gladly join you on Super Earth in our buffed-up Honorary Guard armor. Helldivers got this! For Liberty and Super Earth.
