Is the Players’ Outrage Over Crossovers in Helldivers 2 Justified?

A Helldivers 2 crossover with Mr Peanutbutter

Over the last couple of days, a recent interview the Arrowhead CEO and CCO gave at the G-Star Conference has gained a lot of attention. The developers discussed their creative process and disclosed their plans for the future. While some plans, like vehicles, were praised, other plans, like making Chaosdivers official and possible crossovers, didn’t sit too well with Helldivers 2 players.

Helldivers 2 Players Have Concerns About Possible Collaborations

Immediately after skimming through the above-mentioned article, some Helldivers took to social media to complain. The main concern was that the game would become unplayable due to silly skins that weren’t lore-appropriate.

Internal_Ad_4586 noted: “Ok. Just so we’re all on the same page. You. Me. Arrowhead… NO CROSSOVERS! I mean, we have disagreements about many things in this game, but we’re all united on this one topic, right? I’m all for ‘inspired by’. Viper Commandos’ Predator nods. Truth Enforcers’ Star Wars vibe. Keep ’em coming. But straight-up crossovers? I’m gonna have to put my foot down. I don’t want Dua Lipa dropping a 500 while John Wick is soloing a Factory Strider. I’d immediately hang up my cape”.

As of the time of writing this article, the OP’s post has more than 5,3k upvotes and almost a thousand comments (mostly listing desired crossovers). That means that it’s safe to say that the community has actual concerns over the possible crossovers in Helldivers 2. But, are those concerns justified?

Devs Explain Their Vision of Crossovers

As it turns out, the players’ concerns might be completely unjustified. Yes, the Helldivers 2 developers talked about possible collaborations and crossovers, however, they explained what was acceptable and what wasn’t.

In the interview, Shams Jorjani and Johan Pilestedt shared their vision for possible collaborations. Keep in mind that the interview is auto-translated from Korean, so some names/terms are off. Still, the devs’ message is quite clear.

Shams Jorjani revealed: “We are also planning crossovers (collaborations) with other IPs. We don’t want to do too many crossovers, but we are considering appropriate collaborations that fit the game’s atmosphere”.

The dynamic duo went on to discuss good crossover choices with the interviewer. They listed Warhammer, Alien, Starcraft, and Starship Troopers. Jorjani added: “Bringing in the Zerg from Starcraft would be good, and bringing in Terran Marine weapons would be good too. Something like a Gauss rifle”.

Finally, the devs explained how important it was for an IP to be familiar to players and still fit in Helldivers 2. Pilestedt stated: “Yes. I think we need to be very careful and cautious when applying any skin or cosmetic. For example, even if I like a certain skin, I don’t want it to ruin the game experience of my teammates. I think the whole process has to be done carefully”.

So, don’t worry, your favorite game won’t be full of pop singers any time soon. Also, this is a reminder to pay attention and always check out the source before believing a rumor. Now, as we wait for those well-thought-out collaborations, a Major Order is in progress, and your fellow Helldivers need some help. For Liberty and Managed Democracy.
