During your treks over worlds encompassing the Helldivers 2 galactic map, you might have come across giant landmarks that look suspiciously ominous. Plated and with scything protrusions, these edifices represent a callback to the first Helldivers game. One such remnant is an exoskeleton of a massive Terminid called the Hive Lord, which might signal that there are even bigger threats looming over the horizon.
Could superbosses make an appearance in Helldivers 2?
While on a dive, TheLastCatQuasar came upon an exoskeleton of a Hive Lord, snapping a screenshot that we share below, and posing a question – what is this and is this bad? Yes, yes it is.
The structure in question is just one of several superbosses from the original game. Seeing the massive creature, players understandably posed the question: “How did it work in the first game? Were they in the level or was the entire mission to go after them?” In short,
Each faction had one, representing a solitary enemy in a dangerous mission devoted to dealing with it. So no objectives, no markers – just a big boss fight. MJBotte1 was able to recount each of the big threats: “ The Hive Lord is the one for the Terminids, but the Illuminate had the Great Eye, and the Cyborgs had the Siege Mech.” The most horrifying part is that this exoskeleton represents a moult of the Hive Lord – something it sheds as it grows larger. Take a second to process that – it’s even bigger than the landscape landmark we can encounter on various Terminid planets. And that’s just bugs… No doubt the Automatons are working on something of a similar planet-threatening scale, not to mention the Illuminate, when they decide to show up.
Of course, there is the question of when we’ll be able to battle these massive beasts, and the answer is that we plainly don’t know. They might not even show up, or they could appear in a morphed variant from what we’ve seen in Helldivers. But it would be a cool concept to bring back, especially due to the difference in how the two games operate. Imagine a whole mission in an area that’s only devoted to a drop that culminates in a spectacular boss fight against one of these superbosses. We’d be excited to try it out! What do you think – will we see them make a return? Or are you happy to leave them be?
